4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise January 15, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I really did not think Schoolboy Q had this in him after his previous mixtape, Setbacks. I always looked at Black Hippy as three dope emcees with one(Schoolboy)very average tag along. Not anymore. Habits and Contradictions blows Setbacks completely out of the water. Everything is top notch on this album. Old school and dark sounding production, sick flows, dope guest appearances(although very few). Schoolboy Q shows on H&B that he is growing as an artist and emcee. Don't sleep on this man. Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q are bringing the west coast back. The future is bright for rap/hip hop with these four dudes on the come up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work of Art January 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Honestly I stumbled upon Schoolboy Q through a video posted on a hip-hop site. I hadn't heard of him. I finally found that "Setbacks" mixtape and took a listen. I heard a clip of a song called F'd Up...and I was like this dude going off! Reminds me of the way Dr. Dre and Snoop would get on a beat and ride it till the wheels fell off. Schoolboy has solid flow. Honestly Top Dog Ent. has nothing but lyricists. The album Habits & Contradictions is fitting because who doesn't have them? Well that's if you tell the truth to yourself. If there is a such thing as putting your best foot forward for an artist then this is the blueprint. Throughout the album he keeps it consistent, and he has some crazy punchlines. That "Nightmare on Figg St." though, that's like assault with a deadly weapon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Detention for Schoolboy! April 26, 2012
By King
Format:MP3 Music
First Off, I must say that I am a fairly big fan of Black Hippy. I have been following Kendrick Lamar since he was calling himself K.Dot, so I am not somebody who just stumbled onto this guy yesterday and decided to pick up this CD on a whim. I have been anticipating the releases of this groups solo albums for some time, but now, after listening to this i'm not entirely sure these artists are ready to handle an entire album (apart from Kendrick, of course). Jay Rock's solo was not up to par either, and now Schoolboy's "Habits & Contradictions" is leaving a lot to be desired. These two (Jay & Q ) seem to not be able to get past the 90's era lifestyle they grew up in. Hip-Hop in 2012 is no longer about skin color and street credibility.....it has gone back to it's 80's roots where people are more concerned with mic skills and lyricism. A majority of the lyrics on this album are basic early 90's simple street wordplay. B*tch, B*tch, Guns, Guns, Hoe, Hoe, Weed, Blunts, etc...etc. Like are you serious?....step up your pen game, man!

Now, I will say that a few songs on here are nice; "Sacrilegious & Blessed" top this album for me....but just like Jay Rock's CD, "Say Wassup" was really the only cut I listened to on a consistent basis. There is no question that Schoolboy is dope, he could definitely carry an entire albums worth of materiel if he actually tried stepping up his lyrics and started talking about more than a few limited subject matters. Putting the spotlight back on Kendrick and highlighting his album 'Section 80'....you can see the different subjects, points of view and angles he attacks with his writing. "Hol' Up, A.D.H.D, No Make-Up, Keisha's Song, Blow My High, and finally HiiiPower." All of these songs are completely different with entirely different subject matters...and yet, they are all incredibly dope and powerful in their own way. I wish and hope that Schoolboy approaches his next album with this kind of diversity; it will definitely help him grow as a solo artist if he does. Unless you are a die hard fan....I would probably skip this and wait for a future album or the Black Hippy group release.
