A guide to using humor to improve your life. Life hasn't always been kind to David Jacobson. He lost his father at an early age. Soon after, he was diagnosed with severe arthritis that put an end to his dreams of an athletic career and left him temporarily confined to a wheelchair. But at his lowest point, bedridden and forced to rely upon his mother for everything, Jacobson had a revelation. While attempting to race his mother to a ringing telephone, his purposefully exaggerated walk caused her to burst into laughter-making them both feel better. The author then realized that humor was a powerful tool for improving an individual's health, mental state and general well-being. He also came to believe that humor could help in other areas, such as dealing with anger and helping people with divergent opinions communicate effectively with one another. In his book, Jacobson lays out his theories in detail. The author's sense of humor ranges from the scatological to the brainy to the absurd. He effectively highlights examples from his own life to support his theories and presents a strong case for laughter. The narrative does seem somewhat disjointed at times, but, overall its scattershot style fits in with the author's less-than-serious approach to his topic. Most impressive is the book's obvious warmth and sincerity. It reads like a labor of love, not an attempt to cash in, and it is difficult not to like the author by the end. While Jacobson's work is short on true belly laughs, only the most hard-hearted and humorless of readers will get to the end with out several, if not many quality chuckles. The book's collection of illustrations, including photographs and original artwork, fleshes out this guide to comic healing. A warm, touching look at the power of laughter. --Kirkus Discoveries

You wouldn't think David Jacobson has a lot to laugh about. He was nearly crippled by arthritis at age 22, has spent the nearly three decades since then in varying levels of physical pain and works as a social worker in an emergency room. But Jacobson, 49, doesn't waste his energy whimpering. He works hard at the serious endeavor of seeing the funny side of life. He has self-published the book "The 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Humorous People." "I think everybody has problems with living, and whether it's emotional or physical pain that we're dealing with, we all need ways to cope with it. . . . I'm saying, 'Here's how I cope with it and you can use this coping mechanism, too,' " Jacobson said. The book is being sold through online book dealers, including Amazon.com. Jacobson has received orders from around the world, including a request for 200 copies from a Nigerian bookstore. (I just hope it's not run by a Nigerian prince. That never turns out well.) Jacobson learned about the healing power of laughter early in life, which led him to his first habit of treating humor as a necessity, not a luxury. His father died when Jacobson was 8. All the students in Jacobson's third-grade class wrote sympathy cards that Jacobson's family read together, he recalled in his book. One child wrote, "Don't be sad. I would be sad too if my fat dad died." Jacobson wrote that it was the first laugh the family had together since his father's death. Throughout his teens, Jacobson was an exceptional wrestler. As a young adult, he earned a second-degree brown belt in judo and thought he might have an Olympic career in his future. Instead, he was stricken with rheumatic fever at age 22, followed by a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis, which affects both skin and joints. The arthritis did most of its damage in the first year, fusing or swelling joints in Jacobson's spine, knees and ankles. Lacking even the strength to eat, he dropped from 136 to 112 pounds. He went home to his mother in a wheelchair but he was determined not to stay in one. As he started to try to walk again, Jacobson retained his sense of humor. He'd "race" his mother to answer the telephone, "dragging myself like Igor, the knuckles of my right hand touching the floor, drooling, tongue out and hobbling toward the phone." The silliness helped keep both their spirits high during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Jacobson believes his attitude is what keeps him working as a productive member of society instead of at home in bed. Over the years, Jacobson has discovered if he can giggle for a good 10 minutes, perhaps while watching a funny movie or reading a Dave Barry book, he can get two hours of pain-free sleep. As a social worker at University Medical Center, Jacobson's job has many bleak moments. He may be there to help tell someone their loved one has died. He's there for psychiatric patients and sexual assault and child abuse cases. Those are obvious situations in which humor is inappropriate, he said. But at all other times, it's his favorite prescription. One day, a 90-year-old patient asked Jacobson if he could send in a social worker with large breasts instead. Jacobson left the room and returned minutes later with cloth stuffed in his shirt to give him a bodacious chest. "This is the best I can do," he told the patient. Jacobson said the most important of the habits is the "half-habit" of changing negative thoughts to positive ones. It's only a half-habit, because nobody can be positive all the time, he explained. Examples of the conversion include, for example, changing the thought, "My body looks gross" to, "Compared to what I'll look like in 40 years, I don't look too bad." Or if you think, "Nobody likes me," replace that sentiment with, "I haven't met everyone yet. There's still hope --ANNE T. DENOGEAN Tucson Citizen Newspaper Columnist

I laughed out loud numerous times while reading this book. What a great way to go through life, the way David Jacobson has. You'll walk away from this with a better attitude towards the negative things we all face in life. You can choose to mope through your life or read this book and get through it with a smile and/or a laugh and helps others do the same. --David S. Lempert

This review is from: The 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Humorous People (Paperback)
Life is funny if you let it be. Even when you feel like it shouldn't be, deep down in your spirit there is humor waiting to giggle out into the world. David M. Jacobson reminds us to let the laughter loose in his book, "The 7 ½ Habits of Highly Humorous People." It isn't a joke book, but it is a delightful reminder to watch for the jokes in life, even, or maybe especially, the ones that are on you.

David has had his fair share of jokes played on him. Is he bitter? Not that I could tell. He emits happiness through the pages of his book. He shares joy and it's contagious. Be warned that you will not be able to read this book without cracking a smile and likely will come away from it a better person. Of the 7 ½ habits you'll learn about, I think the half habit is the most important and the best way to get started on changing your life. Simply, it is to change the way you think. Not a simple task! Turning the negative thought into a positive one is challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. What finding the positive does for yourself is life changing, and the thoughts you share with others can have a profound influence on them. The other 7 habits are equally reflective and uplifting, from realizing that humor is a necessity to humorizing with humorgy (you'll have to read the book to find out what that means!); the lessons within this book are not meant to simply help a class clown to develop his style but to show the world the power of laughter.

David uses his self proclaimed necessary self-effacing humor to open his world to the reader. It becomes very easy to understand how he needed to let out those giggles and how it changed his life. Throughout the book he throws in one liners and obtuse observations and this made me laugh out loud. It is a funny read, but also a wonderful life lesson guide. Would you go to a guru who sits atop a unicycle? Maybe you should. This book is well written and easily accepted as truth. It holds deep insights regarding inner spirit and higher powers, and interpretations of classic comedy. This is a mix you cannot miss! I only wish it were longer and my visit with David were not over.
