Clearly exposed History of the Austrian branch of Habsburgs and the state they had created. Naturally it is not possible in full details to cover 1600 years of History of what today is Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia,Poland, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia, and Ukraine in relatively small two volumes book. However it is provided with extensive references, and could be extreemley usefull for anybody who would like to read the History of the one of the above mentioned nations, and needs an understanding of the broader Central European cotext in which they exist. The book is not free from controversy. Attempts to build pseudo-Charlemagnic entety, EU awards gold Charlemagne Medal for merits in the building of United Europe, caused European intellectual elite to revise history of the Medieval Supra-National States, treat them as a kind of precusors of EU, and claim that "Right of Nations for self-determination" was a sad abberation causing the two World Wars. In the same vein author meticulously describes mutal recriminations, grievances, contempt and hartred, of Sudetten Deutch and Czechs, Slavs (Czechs, Slovaks, Croats and Slovenians) and Hungarians, Hungarians and Romanians, Hungarians and Germans from at least 17 century till 1918, and then makes quite sudden vault about the face, and says that Habsburg Empire had collapsed, not because of internal inter-national conflicts in the atmosphere of military defeat and economic collapse, but because outsiders, who thought that they knew better, allowed nationalism of small nations to destroy it, to the effect that seeds of the World War II had been created -sizable German minorities in Sudetten Land and Lower Silesia, and chain of small, weak economically and unstable politically states, having mutual territorial claims to each other.Read more ›
