Book Description

In 1924, Hachiko was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life Hachiko saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925 when Professor Ueno didn't return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the station where his friend was waiting.

Hachiko was given away after his master's death but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. After some time, Hachiko realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachiko waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he didn't see his friend among the commuters at the station.

Hachiko became a permanent fixture at the train station, which eventually attracted the attention of commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachiko and Professor Ueno together each day. Realizing that Hachiko waited in vigil for his dead master, their hearts were touched. They brought Hachiko treats and food to nourish him during his wait. This continued for 10 years, with Hachiko appearing only in the evening, precisely when the train was due at the station.

Hachiko: The True Story of the Royal Dogs of Japan and One Faithful Akita is Hachiko's story, as well as an informative look at dog culture in Japan and the history and tradition of the Akita-ken, one of the most ancient, beloved, and faithful dog breeds ever.

Very impressed with the story behind the movie. Knowable story on the begining of this breed of dogs found it very helpful. Still hard to believe the love this dog had for its master. Gives me a must different feel for this animal in many ways.Very special story!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Chuken" - One Famous Faithful Dog, October 14, 2011

This review is from: Hachiko: The True Story of The Royal Dogs of Japan and One Faithful Akita (Paperback)
Hachiko was a real dog from Tokyo, Japan who lived between 1923 and 1935. He is known all over Japan and a good portion of the world as "Chuken" Hachiko, meaning "faithful dog", because, when his master, a Japanese agriculture professor, died suddenly, Hachiko, for some 10 years, came to the same train station in Tokyo where he had greeted his master each afternoon as the professor returned from the university. "Hachiko - The True Story of the Royal Dogs of Japan and One Faithful Akita" tells the actual tale of this marvelous dog without fictionalization and also includes information about the Akita breed. Although the book probably is aimed at an elementary school age audience, I found it quite engaging and informative as an adult, too.

I first learned about this remarkable dog by watching "Hachi - A Dog's Tale" [DVD\Blu-Ray], an Americanized version of this story starring Richard Gere and a couple of pretty wonderful Akita dogs. When you pop it into the DVD player, be sure to have a box of tissues handy. Although it is both a little sanitized from what really happened to the real Hachiko and more sad than what actually happened, it still packs an emotional punch.

There are a couple of other books available on Amazon that are partially fictional accounts of caring and concerned young persons who grow up as Hachiko maintains his vigil. These books, "Hachiko Waits" and "Hachiko - The True Story of A Loyal Dog" probably are aimed at a child of maybe 3rd or 4th grade, but, it never talks down, and is certainly a gentle reminder that being faithful, concerned, and caring are good characteristics for humans to have as well as faithful dogs.

Get the movie and read the books. Or read the books and watch the movie - either works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of 4.99, June 1, 2011

I wanted to read more about Hachiko after seeing a movie preview. I can't believe I waste 5 bucks on this book. It is written for an elementary school child to read. Very simple sentences and not many details. Part one is a quick run through of how the owner was connected with his pet and the love they shared. Part two is mainly about the breed itself.
