Hack Attacks Denied

If you?ve read John Chirillo?s provocative work,Hack Attacks Revealed, you?re well on your way to understanding how hackers view internetworking technologies, the techniques they use to exploit network security holes, and what you can do to recognize oncoming attacks.

  • How to detect and protect against intrusion?from backdoor and flooding attacks to mail bombing, viral infections, and Web page hacking
  • Essential technical hack countermeasures pertaining to popular gateways and routers, Internet server daemons, operating systems, and proxies and firewalls

5.0 out of 5 stars Icing on the Cake, June 24, 2001

This review is from: Hack Attacks Denied: Complete Guide to Network LockDown (Paperback)
This information is the icing on the cake...a logical follow up to Revealed for those times when you read Revealed and asked yourself:

"Damn...ok...so what the hell else can I do to stop this?!?"

Another great book by Chirillo with realistic methodical approaches to locking things down and keeping them locked (most likely in your environment...not some fantasy lab where users are passive and understanding). The book has detailed examples on every topic and links for when even this great resource starts to loose it luster...although I see it remaining useful for much longer than the average ivory tower fear mongering "information security" pot boiler.

Should this information been included in Revealed...maybe...but Revealed is thick enough as it is (not a bad thing.) A box set of the two really isn't a bad idea...particularly if it was sweetened with a full Tiger Suite 2.0 or both books on pdf.

1.0 out of 5 stars Written by a hacker?, July 19, 2001
This review is from: Hack Attacks Denied: Complete Guide to Network LockDown (Paperback)
Definitely not written by an author this book is a jumble of information. Not explained well, a lot of the data is incorrect anyway and general assumptions are made without proof to back them. A lot seems to be the author's opinion rather than actual fact, and in a technological industry, you really need to prove your statements. Technical people will buy this to learn from, so will need more than just opinions to implement security in their networks. I didn't feel that I got a good step-by-step walkthrough of how to fully secure our network--many options and tools are presented but mainly the book leaves you paranoid that you cannot fully protect your company. I liked Hacking Exposed better because it was less general and left me with fewer decisions and questions. Also I felt the book was heavy with with charts and reference lists and not enough detailed explanation of "why" and "how". Just a lot of "what". I need more explanation and insight.

2.0 out of 5 stars Much covered, not well-explained, July 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Hack Attacks Denied: Complete Guide to Network LockDown (Paperback)
Not a very well-executed demonstration of network security knowledge in my opinion. Too much material is covered in a not-well organized way. Lots of odds and ends are included but not well-explained and diagrams not very helpful. I didn't get as much out of this as I expected. It's a jumble of code, networking protocols and hacking software descriptions. I don't need code. I need real instructive information on security.
