3.0 out of 5 stars A whole new light, March 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Hack//Game Music Collection (Audio CD)
I must say, I have played all 4 of the .hack games for PS2, and through the entire one hundred thirty eight hours I spent in The World, I was quite under whelmed by the soundtrack. It wasn't quite bad, but at the same time, it was easily overlooked. However, being a series fanatic, I found myself compelled to pick this album up. I was caught completely off guard. No, there are no remixes or special arrangements. Just the songs they way they appear on the PS2. However, it seems that the original quality of these composition were lost when they were transferred to the game. I didn't recognize most of these songs at first, as they sound so much better without constant sound effects overlapping the music. A good example is the acoustic guitar in the first song, "Server Water Capital Aqua Anu". A melody which grew jarring after wearing on my ears for so many hours of gameplay suddenly sound fresh and soft; I could finally appreciate the song for what it is.

Of course, most fans will buy this for the various arrangements of Aura's theme, and while I admit that I too am lured by the haunting melody and angelic vocals, they are just icing on the cake. Many are disappointed that .hack//SIGN (and Liminality) composer Yuki Kajiura is absent from this album, and though I would have liked to see her hand in this CD as well, this CD shines a whole new light on some tragically unappreciated works. I hope you find just as much when you discover this soundtrack for yourself.

3.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack, May 10, 2008

The music here is diverse and deep, it's really a great listen.

For those who are bummed that there is nothing from liminality on here, you should check out the album specifically for liminality. It's got a lot of great tracks. Another recommendation is .Hack//EXTRA, which has many remixes and such.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, September 22, 2009

For such a dirt cheap price, the music is great. If you've ever liked .Hack, whether it be the video games, tv shows or books, this soundtrack is enjoyable. What is offers is a nice review of the 4 games, and I'm glad I got it. Nostalgic.
