Book Description

Hacking with Kali introduces you the most current distribution of the de facto standard tool for Linux pen testing. Starting with use of the Kali live CD and progressing through installation on hard drives, thumb drives and SD cards, author James Broad walks you through creating a custom version of the Kali live distribution. You’ll learn how to configure networking components, storage devices and system services such as DHCP and web services.

Once you're familiar with the basic components of the software, you'll learn how to use Kali through the phases of the penetration testing lifecycle; one major tool from each phase is explained. The book culminates with a chapter on reporting that will provide examples of documents used prior to, during and after the pen test.

This guide will benefit information security professionals of all levels, hackers, systems administrators, network administrators, and beginning and intermediate professional pen testers, as well as students majoring in information security.

  • Provides detailed explanations of the complete penetration testing lifecycle
  • Complete linkage of the Kali information, resources and distribution downloads
  • Hands-on exercises reinforce topics

I'll go through my thoughts as the book is laid out:

Chapters 1 though 3. Essentially it's talking about the basics of how to install and use a debian/ubuntu based OS. This information contains more screen shots per page than actual text, and fairly useless screenshots at that. If someone needs this level of help to simply install the OS, then you would think it would be in a more beginner level book. There is literally pages of discussion on how to use dpkg and apt.

Furthermore, the book is about 185 pages, excluding appendices. This information spans about 35 pages. Seriously, I didn't expect 1/6 of this book to be this level of basic information.

It's also poorly laid out. One chapter jumps from how to update with apt and use tarballs to how to use Nessus. What? Those topics aren't remotely related to each other. Even better, the "practical guide" to Nessus as the section is named, isn't even a full page of information.

For a book that claims on the cover "Practical Penetration Testing Techniques" I'm highly underwhelmed.

I'll have to update later with more info.

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected more content. December 29, 2013

This book is good for beginners but doesn't go much further than that. I good portion of the book is instruction on how to set up Kali. I was surprised that wireless hacking wasn't even covered. Good for absolute newbies but beyond that, much of the information can be found elsewhere and more in-depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as technical as I expected January 23, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book to gain an understanding of how to execute commands in Kali Linux. Unfortunately, the book focuses heavily on theory while providing very basic tool use. Being a CEH, I'm familiar with theory and the tools available in this release, but I want to become very acquainted with the tool commands and switches for my pen tests. This book doesn't exactly offer that. For a beginning pen tester, I think this book provides decent guidance on pen testing from a high level, but you're better off relying on the easily available manuals for actual testing.

Great book for embarkment into Kali. The book starts out by going over how to install and configure Kali step by step.
This book was written with clear and precise instructions. Easy to read and follow along. The book doesn't get too advance. That's for another title. If you never heard of Kali and are now trying to learn it. This is a good guid to have.
