Editorial Reviews

2009 debut album from the British Alt-Pop band, a beautifully literate and ambitious release. From the dizzying MBV/M83 swoops and morning-after ruefulness of the LP's opening song to the open-tuned, Appalachian folk feel of the record's closing track, the album thrums with subtle invention and quiet emotional intensity. Fans of Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene and Bon Iver will be utterly beguiled. Indie Rock rarely gets to enjoy its innocence these days, but Bombay Bicycle Club knows that's exactly what makes it precious. Jamie and Jack formed Bombay Bicycle Club after spending their early teens trying to sneak into 18+ gigs together. They were dissuaded at first by Jamie's guitar-playing Dad, Neill MacColl (son of Ewan, sister of Kirsty), who once told Jack he should become a plumber rather than a musician if he ever wanted to make a decent living. Then Neill heard the astonishing cache of songs Jack had amassed in his bedroom with Garageband and a cheap guitar, and instantly changed his mind, offering to produce Bombay Bicycle Club's first demos. Island.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tell your friends! December 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD
It's unforgivable that these guys aren't yet enjoying the same kind of success as Death Cab or Modest Mouse. Listen to "Always Like This" or "Ghost" and tell me they're not every bit as talented. The entire band has a synergy to them that makes it sound like they've been playing off of each other for years and years. Everything flows so well, and seems so natural and fluid. The rhythm section, especially, is unbelievable. Reminds me of "Silent Alarm"-era Bloc Party. I have to watch my comparisons though, because BBC has produced a sound that - while it pays homage to other sources - is completely their own. The only (minor) gripe I had was that I wanted to hear Jack Steadman, the lead singer, just once bust out in a scream like the "lost and loaded" part from "Lazy Eye" by Silversun Pickups. But hey, guess they're just not that kind of band. And there's so much else to love on this album that it's almost not worth mentioning. Seriously, if you've never heard this amazing band, check out "What If", "Cancel On Me", or "Always Like This". I'm sure fans of Two Door Cinema Club, We Are Scientists, Vampire Weekend, even Florence & the Machine, will find a new favorite band. And hopefully, once you've bought this album, you will SHARE IT WITH YOUR FRIENDS! Spread the love! Tell everybody about Bombay Bicycle Club! Give 'em the recognition they deserve!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Addictive, Complex and Inspired December 14, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
It's extraordinarily rare that I review the music I purchase (I'm no music critic), but I can't NOT say anything about this album. Absolutely one of my current favorites, I find it hard not to put this album on repeat. All of Bombay Bicycle Club's albums are fantastic, but this was the first one I heard and I immediately fell in love with them. "Lamplight," in particular, has a great rhythm to it and is probably personal favorite track. Other favorites include "Always Like This" and "What If." Their songs vary from upbeat and exciting with strong foundations from the drummer (most of the album) to lyrical and more guitar-driven tracks like "The Giantess."

I highly recommend all of their albums, but the others don't quite match up to this one. An absolute must-buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC <> AM+K August 2, 2009

This is a really solid debut producted by Jim Abbiss (Artic Monkeys and Kasabian). What a pleasant find and evidentially I'm not the only one as there are no other Amazon reviews for thisyear. Give it a go and listen to Lamplight, Always Like This and Cancel On Me... solid!
