Editorial Reviews

Alameda Sun April 2004 Julia Park

Natasha Miller’s new CD, I Had a Feelin’ is a pleasure, and not a guilty one.

Product Description

Natasha Miller discovered a gold mine. Actually, the gold mine discovered her. Miller was giving an interview on KCSM Jazz 91 in the Bay Area, promoting one of her many concerts. Little did she know that listening that day was songwriter Bobby Sharp. Known for his hit song Unchain My Heart, made famous and a Top Ten Hit by Ray Charles in 1961, Sharp was blown away by Natasha's voice. After hearing her on the radio, he figured Natasha would appreciate his songs, so he sent them to her. When she opened the package of his songs, including never-before-heard gems, she knew she had discovered a long-lost treasure of the most beautiful jazz ballads - lyrically masterful, melodically exquisite, and harmonically alluring.

I Had a Feelin’, Miller's third album, is a tribute to the songbook of Bobby Sharp. Natasha glows on the album, recorded with Mr. Sharp standing at her side. Produced by Miller, along with her bassist/recording engineer Jon Evans (who tours with Tori Amos), the album is a timeless document of songs and music and solidifies the interpretive powers of Miller and the songwriting legend of Sharp.

This is a tough review to write. I read about this CD in both local papers (SF Chronicle, SJ Mercury), had heard Miller on KCSM--maybe even the same concert the sparked this album, so I had high expectations. Sky high expectations.

Natasha Miller has a grand instrument and the Bobby Sharp songbook has some nifty songs in it. But Miller is not the second coming of Sarah Vaughn. The disc is well produced, but the result is not quite the ecstatic experience advertised. On the other hand, when was the last time you heard straight, ungimicky singing like this? Awhile, probably.

If you like jazz and ballads and a very good singer, this is an outstanding album, even *the* outstanding album that I've heard this year. You won't be disappointed, since the material is neither derivative or overtly commercial. Miller's voice carries you along and so... recommended. Strongly.

I like all of the songs that Natasha sings in her cd "I had a feelin". Last week I had friends come over and I played the cd. They all said "What beautiful music. I told them I personally know this woman. They said "How's that?" Well, One day when I was filming a wedding at the B of A building in S.F. I met her, chatted with her and filmed while she was singing. I thought then that she was good but listening to her cd "I had a feelin" confirmed my opinion even more. I think anyone that buy's this cd will definitely enjoy every single one of her songs. I also have other Cd's sang by her which are also good, but I like this one best so far.

Move over, Peggy Lee!
Natasha Miller exudes sex and feeling in my favorite song she has recorded.
Can't remember which CD 'Fever' is on....but buy them all and find out!
