Hafiz' Calendars of Beauty,
By
This review is from: Hafiz 2008 Calendar (Calendar)
As a devotee of the Sufi poet Hafiz, it is with sacred wonder that I hang a calendar that depicts the art and poetry of his era. This is my second year to get a calendar and yes, of course, I had to open it right away when I received it! Thanks to the terrific artists and those who chose the poetry to go with it.

I sent this to a friend of mine as a thank-you gift, and here's what he wrote back: "...Then I opened the calender. The pictures were so beautiful and the poems so moving that it brought tears to my eyes. I feel truly humble and grateful to receive such a wonderful gift." Yes, the illustrations and words really are that exquisite, and that moving. You just might wind up sending one to everyone you love.

I ordered all the Hafiz books through Amazon. I love his conversations with God in the form of poems. He's witty, intelligent, humane, enlightened! I was thrilled to see the calendar. I bought one for myself and one for my daughter. I would recommend it to anyone who seeks comfort and inspiration in a world gone terribly wrong! Roisin Moriarty

This is a beautifully illustrated calender laced with the wonderful thoughts and poems of Hafiz. Where the art work is pure joy to look at and the writing a pure joy to read. I am glad I bought it.

For years we have enjoyed the Hafiz calendar. A couple of years ago there was a change to more computer graphics. We preferred the older style because it was not so busy. But we got used to it.
However this year the calendar seems to have lost or diluted it's focus in Persian and Hafiz themes by bringing in a lot of still lifes (no people) and many seem to be images that are Chinese not Persian. I love Chinese art. But it is unexpected and strangely very out of place in a Hafiz calendar. So we feel Amber Lotus got the images on this one very wrong this year. Very disappointed.

I'm a big fan of Hafez and chose this over the Rumi calendar primarily for the poetry.
I was hoping it'd have the original Farsi in calligraphy too, but it doesn't. I would have liked to see references to what the original poems were too. Though it's a matter of personal taste, I found the illustrations are often unrelated to the poetry and are a bit sterile compared to what it could be (for example, the 2011 Rumi calendar by the same publisher has miniature-style illustrations that are more in-line with Persian poetry). From a practical persepective, there's good spacing for writing down notes on the days, international and religious holidays are included, and the print quality is good. Overall, it's a nicely made calendar with Persian-inspired poetry and illustrations that would also make a good gift, but it is a bit inauthentic if you're expecting to get more of the Persian culture (illustrations, calligraphy, fidelity of poetry).
