I hardly ever give five star reviews, since they reek of hyperbole but THIS is a powerhouse of a recording. My family were lucky enough to see Omar Souleyman live at the Arab American Heritage Festival in Dearborn, Michigan a few summers back and this guy can belt out songs at fever pitch over relentless beats and trancey synth tones. The lyrics are all in Arabic of course, but typically involve heavy duty love lyrics. The usual stuff: broken hearts, unmet expectations, the ecstatic bliss of the loved one's touch. Recorded along the way on a European tour, these selections are a great port of entry into the body of work of, for my money one of the most powerful singers working in the world today. I can only hope that the recent unrest in his native Syria has left Omar Souleyman, his band, and their families, untouched. We may not have a chance to see him perform live in the US again, so hear this and get the next best thing. Not since the late great Fela Kuti has music been so intense and goose-bump inducing. If you're a fan of Brian Eno and David Byrne's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" you will love this -- it's the real deal.

Very rare that I review anything, but I feel this album deserves more attention. I saw around a dozen acts at 'Roo 14, and Omar absolutely killed it! I think the crowd doubled over the course of his show. His live shows are incredible!
