Book Description

Hagar the Horrible October 20, 2009
This hardcover volume collects together the first two years' worth of strips that helped to forge the legend of Hågar the Horrible and make him one of the world's most loved and most popular cartoon characters of all time.

In a world filled with dragons, wizards, sea monsters, Norse gods and titanic battles, strides the man known only as – HÅGAR THE HORRIBLE! The world's mildest marauder.

Following the noble traditions of Beowolf and umm... that movie, The Vikings, comes the epic saga of the best-known Viking in the history of the world, the lovable, Hågar the Horrible – and his unending quest to put meat, mead and swag on the family table.

Review

"The book is a delightful and affectionate tribute to the comic strip and its creator and should give pleasure to Hagar fans and anyone who relishes a chuckle" --Blogcritics.org

About the Author

Hagar really is a family business both on and off the paper. Dik retired from the strip in 1998 and his son Chris took over the strip. Hagar was a phenomenal success from the very start. It debuted on Feb. 4, 1973, in an impressive 136 newspapers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A giant of a strip, October 26, 2009

A nice biography by Dik's sons begins the tome along with the illustrated main characters. This is indeed an historical reprinting of a monumental comic strip. But, I have two disappointments. The first daily was February 5, 1973, but, according to King Features Syndicate, the Sunday was "launched" February 4, 1973. (I had thought, perhaps, there was not a Sunday for the first two years.) I would have raised my rating to 4 l/2 stars if the introduction had only mentioned a collection of Sundays was in the works, even in black and white, which would have actually been closer to Browne's originals. My second point is that the subtitle says 1973-1974, but the book closes out June 18. Foolish me! I had expected the entire year! This having been said, this book is still a must purchase for anyone interested in the history of comic strip art.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about time!, October 23, 2009

This review is from: Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles: The Dailies 1973-1974 (Hardcover)
I love the current trend of reprinting classic comic strips in book form. Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, Prince Valiant, Terry & The Pirates, Rip Kirby, Bloom County, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, and a host of others! Now Hagar The Horrible has finally reached us! It's about time. This classic strip could have been lost but thank heaven that someone decided to reprint them. I agree with the other reviewer on the size being a bit small but I'll take it. I will end up disappointed if the other volumes do not come out in this series. I am hopeful it will sell well enough to continue. PLEASE BUY A COPY and keep em' coming. Great storyline. Great artwork. Fun strip.
