3.0 out of 5 stars Para cuándo los siguientes tomos?

4.0 out of 5 stars A giant of a strip, October 26, 2009

A nice biography by Dik's sons begins the tome along with the illustrated main characters. This is indeed an historical reprinting of a monumental comic strip. But, I have two disappointments. The first daily was February 5, 1973, but, according to King Features Syndicate, the Sunday was "launched" February 4, 1973. (I had thought, perhaps, there was not a Sunday for the first two years.) I would have raised my rating to 4 l/2 stars if the introduction had only mentioned a collection of Sundays was in the works, even in black and white, which would have actually been closer to Browne's originals. My second point is that the subtitle says 1973-1974, but the book closes out June 18. Foolish me! I had expected the entire year! This having been said, this book is still a must purchase for anyone interested in the history of comic strip art.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about time!, October 23, 2009

This review is from: Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles: The Dailies 1973-1974 (Hardcover)
I love the current trend of reprinting classic comic strips in book form. Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, Prince Valiant, Terry & The Pirates, Rip Kirby, Bloom County, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, and a host of others! Now Hagar The Horrible has finally reached us! It's about time. This classic strip could have been lost but thank heaven that someone decided to reprint them. I agree with the other reviewer on the size being a bit small but I'll take it. I will end up disappointed if the other volumes do not come out in this series. I am hopeful it will sell well enough to continue. PLEASE BUY A COPY and keep em' coming. Great storyline. Great artwork. Fun strip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and small, November 5, 2009

This is a great book, with great comics, and great production values!

But, it is also a small book. This is no real drawback (you can actually read it in bed with no problems), it is just that most of us are by now used to the Terry & The Pirates, Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy-sized books. This one is the exact same size as the Complete Peanuts volumes (but with only two strips per page instead of three), and about three-quarters as thick.

Just be prepared for the (relatively) minute size, and you will NOT be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars My lifetime companion strip!, November 6, 2009

WOW! I'm SO glad this book is out! NOT to tell anyone my life story here, but a childhood condition kept me from having lots of friends early on in my life. Being born in 1964 I was the PERFECT age when Hagar came out. Hagar and other comic characters became my friends as I was an avid reader of many of the strips of the day. Hagar had a special fondness in my heart. I remember the first favorite t-shirt my mom ever bought me was a Hargar shirt!

The strips contained in this strip are SO FUNNY! It's amazing how day in and day out these strips just shine. It's a quick read of course, but it's full of laughs... and it keeps you wanting more.

I DO hope that other editions are to follow including collections of the color Sunday's.

Great book, great price, tons of laughs!

My introduction to Hagar was very late. Honestly. I read Hagar when I subscribed to King Features online subscription. Since we can list any titles we want for a year, I add many titles just by reading one sample. That was how I got Hagar, till I fell in love with this 'horrible' hero=).

Then I decided to know more of this character and couldn't find a proper book, until this book was published. I have to send my highest gratitude to the publishers for kindly have this Epic Chronicles vol. 1 for us who love Hagar most. I don't know if Dik Browne ever made Hagar origins, or when he was young. The strip started as we know him today: married with two kids, loved invading Britain, doing housekeeping at home, etc. However, overall it's a lovely book and I keep laughing and smiling reading every page. Yes true, each page only has two strips. But the size of the book is very compact and I love it. It would be nicer to have a larger book, with 3 or 5 strips on one page. But this EPic Chronicles has more than just two strips in one page.

I do hope we'll get Epic Chronicles vol 2, and then 3, then 4......

It's good to finally see these in English, as they have been available in German for some time now. The presentation of the volume is good, though if you can read German, those volumes are slightly better.

Hagar really "clicks" with me, as I imagine it does with a lot of people out there. Support Hagar! Buy this volume! Write a review!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hagar the Terrific!, November 10, 2009
This review is from: Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles: The Dailies 1973-1974 (Hardcover)
It really is about time to celebrate comicdoms' friendliest (?) Viking. I, for one among many, am pleased that Hagar has now joined the world of comic strip reprint books on the market.

Even now, after 35 years, the genius of Hagar/Dik Browne is apparent. Helga, Hagar, Hamlet, Honi, Lucky Eddie, and the 'pets' form a cast of characters that resonate with readers well. Our daughters have been/are 16 years old on the prowl for a man, but ours don't wear chain mail and carry shields. That does not detract from her angst, and excellent way of handling the 'creeps'. We all know a Lute, don't we! Hamlet is everymans' son who just doesnt't want to follow the footsteps of Dad. Lucky Eddie is that guy you know who keeps rolling on, no matter what life tosses him. Helga, is just Helga. Overbearing, patient, understanding, overbearing...

Onto the content.

As a collector of strips, I often save digital copies of my favorites. When I was younger, I cut them out and pasted them into a book which I still have. If I were to do that with Hagar, 73-74, nearly every strip would be saved. I particularly enjoyed the New Years party (stack them up I'll clean in the morning), and the Lute strips (musician boyfriend). Sure, there are a lot of other good ones too. Viking horns...ear plugs?

This is an enchanting book written by a man whose love for family and humor is easily evident.

Thank you Mr Browne. Keep up the good work Chris and Chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite barbarian, March 2, 2011

Hagar has been around for many years and his strip is one of the few that has maintained its humor and fun throughout. This is a collection of his early strips and, while he has changed a little since these came out, he is still hilarious. This is a great book for anyone who loves the hairy little guy and want to relive some of the early chuckles.
