This review is from: Hagen: Night, Again And Other Works For Wind Ensemble And Solo Instruments (Audio CD)
Hagen is mainly known as a vocal and orchestral composer; he seems to have made his reputation with a series of three operas with librettos by Pulitzer-prize winning poet Paul Muldoon. That's why this disc was a revelation to me. A superb orchestrator, who scores for the band as though it were a symphonic ensemble. His music is eclectic, but concentrated, serious, and deeply expressive. I would recommend this disc as an introduction to the music of a composer whose career has been steadily growing over the past twenty years and who is clearly emerging in a big way.
