This review is from: The Books of Haggai and Malachi (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) (Hardcover)
Having gone through a verse-by-verse sermon series on Malachi, this commentary was by far the most useful to me. Not only does it go into what I considered to be a fair amount of technical, expositional and historical information, but Verhoef does a great job of tying in what I would call pastoral reflection. There was plenty in this commentary to chew on, and plenty to use as pastoral application from behind the pulpit. In my experience of works on these books (especially Malachi), this should be a commentary at the top of a pastor's list.

A great commentary on two of the Post-Exilic Prophets,

Very pleased with this book. The entire NICOT series is excellent. I have been using this book mostly for my study of Hag 2:7 (and its context) and have found it very informative and well written. Verhoef gets into the Hebrew but is not overly technical. It is easy to read but not overly simple. It's just a great commentary on these two books.

An Incredible Tool for Study,

Verhoef provides incredible historical insight into the book of Malachi. Once you have an understanding of the historical context, the text comes to life. A must have commentary for a preacher or teacher.

So far I've only looked at the Malachi section. It upholds the high-quality, engaging approach to the text I have come to expect from NIC commentaries.
