This is really several stories in one--it's a snapshot of a kingdom and the people that are trying to save it--and the people that are trying to take it over. It's a good old-fashioned fantasy--an adventure told from several viewpoints. The Hag is a menace to all men of course, a magical creature that kidnaps and enslaves men. There is a wizard trying to help those on their quest to rescue the king. There is a "regent" trying to run the kingdom until the king can be rescued. All it all, it's a good tale with pirates, magic, and good characterization.
I gave it 3 stars only because I am not a fan of multiple POV. I like to engage with one or maybe two sets of characters and invest in them emotionally. That said, each tale weaves around the others very skillfully. The characters interact well and the viewpoints change cleanly. There is adventure, danger, and action throughout, although the ending, told through a series of letters probably wouldn't fly in today's "show don't tell" world, it does wrap it all up. |
