5.0 out of 5 stars Music For The Grey Feathers, December 11, 2003
This review is from: Haibane-Renmei Soundtrack Hanenone (Audio CD)
One of the things that stands out about the Haibane Renmei series (and there are many) is the way the accompanying music sets the mode and helps to further the plot. It has a clear, limpid style that, while it is never the focus like Yoko Kanno's work, penetrates the listener's awareness. These aren't set pieces, they are telling the viewer what is going on. And they do this with gracious aplomb.

For the most part this is chamber music, which gives it a great deal of intimacy. After some listening, you will find that the apparent simplicity is actually a tightly controlled complexity. While composer Ko Otani doesn't build deep layers of sound, as Kanno does, the theme and variation styling keeps the sounds from wearing on the ear.

While this isn't stunning music, it is very good - Otani doesn't try to steal the show, but to enhance it. If you like melodic, traditional styling you will find this excellent listening with a share of brilliant moments. I don't usually buy CD's from anime series, but when I saw this I snapped it up, and have found it worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing and Beautiful, February 26, 2004

The Haibane Renmei soundtrack shows a great deal of intellectual brilliance in its backing, and even more musical diversity within. The sound varies from bittersweet & melancholy to bright and cheerful. Whether or not you've watched any of the series, this musical score paints vivid images from one piece to the next.

I have found that most of the tracks serve as better background music in my home than anything else. A lot of the songs are somewhat understated unless you crank them up and really, really try to get into them. But this is by no means bad, as the simple beauty in the production clearly shines through in all aspects of the album.

Though I have indeed heard better soundtracks in the past, Haibane Renmei's musical score has a wide variety of melodic styles which help preserve the album's longevity, and each song (at least in part) conveys a brighter message than might initially be heard. It's worth picking up if you like any music from a similar genre, or if you're just in the mood for some soothing (and some powerful) pieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, despite minor quibble, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Haibane-Renmei Soundtrack Hanenone (Audio CD)
I absolutely love the CD. Even if you haven't seen the anime (and you really should), the music is an absolute feast for the ears. If you can handle soft music without tons of crashing, vulgarity (or even lyrics in general) this is a great CD. The two tracks with vocals are nice and have a good air to them, and I'm happy every time one of this CD's tracks comes up on my random playlist.

My only real complaint is a lack of the series ending theme "Blue Flow." If that was on here, this CD would be perfect, but even this minor oversight doesn't dimish my rating in any appreciable way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and emotional!, July 7, 2004

I just got this CD as a birthday gift, just today. I have also seen the entire Haibane-Renmei DVD series! The music on the DVD series, and on the CD, is beautiful and emotional. I don't know why, but some of the songs bring me close to crying (and I don't cry easily!). I will cherish this CD, and listen to it many times! I recommend it to anyone, whether they've seen the DVD series or not. (Note: The CD comes with a small booklet that features an interview with the composer, and lyrics to "Wondering" and "LOVE WILL LIGHT THE WAY").

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Serene, September 26, 2003

This is definitely an album that you can lean back and relax with. Composed of mainly instrumental pieces, it is a fantastic collection of quiet melodies interspersed with a few energetic songs, all inspired by Celtic and medieval composers. The music complements the show excellently, and I'm glad to have it as part of my collection. I highly recommend this album for anyone looking for something to kick back with and dream. While you're at it, take a look at the show if you haven't seen it; it's simply beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, understated music, March 26, 2004

For anyone familiar with the Anime series Haibane Renmei, you should already know how much the music adds to the carefully crafted mood of the show. The soundtrack, on its own, is just as good. Since I bought this album back in September, it has not moved from my CD player. Each song is a different mix of almost celtic sounding chamber music that is wonderful background music for reading, driving, or anything else you might do on a rainy day. The second track on the album, "Free Bird" is beautiful (and always makes me want to dance).
Forget that bubblegum J-pop that most other anime series have... This is much more than your average soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Splendiferous, November 28, 2004
By

I got this OST after watching (and falling in love with) the TV series. This is a perfect counterpoint to the really sad state of most American TV "music"-- every track on this OST is a little marvel of emotional perfection. Some will get stuck in your head for weeks (yet somehow never become annoying), some will make you want to grin and dance, and some will make you want to cry. The best (such as Ailes Grises, one of my all-time favorite piano pieces) will make you want to do all three at once. This is the perfect gift for someone who thinks that all Japanese music is fluff about the power of love and the triumph of the human spirit. Simply must be heard.

When I first watched the anime, I was more interested in the storyline. More than the music. But when I downloaded a preview of the album, I was completely amazed! I have rarely heard such good instrumentel music in all of my life. The Music has a calm, soft melodic tune that does wonders for you if you plan on relaxing. Or sleeping :)

You won't find music like this anywhere else that conveys such powerful emotions or feelings, this music speaks right to your heart. It fills you with a sense of peace that many see as hard to find nowadays.

I highly recommend this for children and adults and especially fans of the anime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such Pretty music, May 20, 2009
By
This review is from: Haibane-Renmei Soundtrack Hanenone (Audio CD)
I have listened to this cd and have even downloaded the music from it. The songs on this CD are very beautiful, especially Free Bird. Song of Dream, Words of Bubble sounds like a lullaby. And Blight sounds so sad and pretty. The songs on this CD are gentle and melodious with plenty of violins and piano accompanying them.
