I had the same experience as Jeff (below) - and at the same place! I was staying with my married daughter in Cleveland over Memorial Day weekend, saw the Haier ESA 410 K (same as the 410 J) in Target and bought it for them. It was up and running within an hour out of the box - including some time taken to make some blocks for the extra-wide custom-sized century-old windows! The four LARGE downstairs rooms have no doors but are all interconnected by open arches. Nevertheless, the next day the unit kept the WHOLE downstairs at 75 deg. while the outside was at 98 deg and dripping with humidity. That's terrific performance for a nominal 10,000BTU unit, especially as after an hour or two getting the temperature down, the a/c was cycling off/on, just leaving the fan running to circulate air. That's economical and environmentally effective. The noise was reasonable and we could all talk and watch TV easily, at normal conversational level, in the same room as the a/c unit. The compressor itself was almost silent.

The Haier a/c unit is outstandingly neatly designed, very well put together and beautifully finished. I have been involved in engineering and design all my life - machine tools, production machinery, etc., so know what I am talking about. I had a good look round inside and quality of design and manufacture shows everywhere. There is absolutely no way that condensate water can possibly drain from the front of a correctly-installed unit into the room as some reviewers on other websites claim. There is no need to drill extra drain holes as there is an absorbent pad in the drain well that wicks condensate to the outside and vaporises it off without any liquid water appearing outside the casing.

Haier provides an excellent guarantee.

I just had my second Haier 10,000 BTU window A/C unit die in less than two years. Because I am out of the original warranty period for the first unit, there is nothing Haier customer service could offer me. It is ridiculous that they continue to offer a unit where almost half of the user reviews report the product either being dead out of the box or dying within a years time. Even for the year that each unit worked, it was so noisy that it made it difficult to hear conversations and very difficult to hear the TV. My 12-year old 6,000 BTU Haier window unit that I still have from college is working fine, but somewhere between then and now they chose to cut corners and produce complete garbage.

I did a lot of reach prior to purchasing the ESA410K (2011 model) a week ago. Frigidaire was my first choice, but with it being 90deg outside in Ohio, nobody was offering any sales on AC units. I happen to find this Haier on sale at Target for $229 ($70 off), so decided to give it a try. I performed the most professional job I could installing the unit, and it performs very well. It's been in the mid-90s this week, and the unit (on energy saver mode), chugs along on LOW, keeping the whole house at 73deg. It is primarily cooling a 300 sq/ft living room and adjoining 144 sq/ft master bedroom, but I circulate the air with a ceiling fan, and it also keeps the other end of the house at 75deg. I have a 1,750 sq/ft ranch. The unit performs as expected, and once the air temp gets caught up, the unit shuts off, like it should. There is no fan or compressor noise inside the house, only the air turbulence (blowing) sound coming from the front vent. You can't ask for anything more than that. The instructions inform you NOT to drill a hole in the bottom, but I did anyway, so that there isn't a standing pool of water inside to get nasty with bugs and leaves. To do this, I merely turned on the unit, watched where the water pooled and drilled a 1/8" hole there (avoiding the coils). After one week, I would highly recommend this unit to others! Consumer Reports rates last year's "410J" model at #6.

I don't usually waste my time leaving comments about home appliances. But this was the biggest piece of junk I ever bought. On first run it sounded like a jet plane engine shooting over the house. Then quickly stopped. This kept on about 3 times in the first minute. I never felt any cold air coming from this unit. Also, I had a smaller Haier unit running in a different window and it produced black mold throughout the house because of poor drainage.

Stay away from Haier products because the proof is written all over the internet that they are nothing but junk. I picked up a GE air conditioner for the same price and it does a great job.

Bought this from Bed Bath and Beyond using a 20% discount after going to PC Richards and Home Depot. This is for a 12x22' studio with 2 southern facing windows and a little used kitchen area. It replaced a 17 year old panasonic slide in window unit. Installation was straight forward but would have been easier if there was a sleeve. It is keeping the room at 73. So far so good. 3 more days of hi ninety's expected.
