2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed bucket - spills too easily, May 22, 2008
By
JerryL (Sea Girt, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
This Haier unit has been operating nicely for several weeks, attractive design, easy to clean air filter and appears to be well built. Only time will tell if it is.
We especially liked the 5 yr. warranty on the refrigeration parts after my previous bad experience with Sears unit and their service.
Major problem we have found has to do with the design of the bucket and "bucket full" shutoff float lacks any water level adjustment.
The water level in the bucket when full is so high that we find it impossible to remove and carry it from the unit without spilling.
A phone call to Haier about this did not provide a solution, as there is no adjustment for the float switch - and from the comments of their customer service agent, ours seems not the first call about this problem.
While there is a knock out plug and flexible hose to allow one to connect this to a permanent drain, the location of our (basement) installation is too far from any plumbing to make this a practical solution

1.0 out of 5 stars Total junk. Don't waste your money, August 9, 2009
By
TekzMekz (Sioux Falls, SD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
I wish I had read all the negative reviews this company gets before wasting my money and time. The first unit worked for about 5 months, then it simply stopped gathering water. The unit looked like it was working, so I did not notice the problem right away, until I checked the the bucket which was dry as a bone. Tried all kinds of things to no avail. Contacted customer service to get a replacement, and the guy on the phone did not even let me finish describing the problem... He already knew the unit was broken and proceeded to give me instructions for getting a replacement. He totally sounded like he had given the same instructions hundreds of times. I was blown away when he told me they did not want me to send the defective unit back. All I needed to do was to cut off about 8" from the power cord and mail it, along with my receipt and a check for $14 to cover the shipping of a refurbished replacement unit. They consider the units basically disposable and not worth shipping back.

The replacement unit arrived about a month later and it worked fine... for about two months. Then it did the same exact thing as the previous one, and a few days later the fan started making a loud noise. Now I'm out of warranty and have two huge paper weights waiting to be taken to the dump. But I have learned one thing... Never again buy a Haier product!

1.0 out of 5 stars Haier waranty is a "NIGHTMARE" DO NOT BUY HAIER, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
This unit worked for 3 months then stopped removing water. Called customer service and was told to send $14.99 plus cut an 8 inch piece off power cord and pull off unit number sticker and send to a P.O. box in N.J. After verification would receive a new unit in 7-10 days. After 10 days called and was told it would be 15 days. Still no unit so called again and was told 15 working days. Still no unit so wrote e-mail to customer service and 5 days later was given a 800 hotline number, called that number and was told unit would be sent by FEDEX that day. 5 days later still no unit, called again and was told order went to wrong warehouse and was being corrected and would be sent that day. 6 weeks have past and no unit, this outfit just keeps jerking your chain, The worst customer service ever. My advice do not buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Haier does not stand by warranty!, March 11, 2009

Had this unit for two years and then compressor died. Sealed system is supposedly warranted for five years. Haier sent me to two different service companies, both of which refused to do warranty work on this unit. One service person was told by his company "don't touch it!". In my experience they do not stand by their products. Stay away!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst piece of appliance I ever had, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
The first one worked for a month, then quit. I returned it to Best Buy for an exchange. The second one worked till the end of the summer, but never worked again a year later. Called support, for $14 fee, they sent me a replacement. The replacement was a refurbished unit and came with a crack, but worked. I was hoping it was going to be an Ugly Duckling. But my hopes were shattered two weeks later: some smell and no water in the bucket. At this poit I want to believe there's something I'm doing wrong, but there's no science to operating a dehumidifier. I'm sticking with the alternative: the product sucks, and I'm surprised Best Buy would carry something like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dying at Two and a Half Years of Age, August 29, 2011
By
WILLIAM H FULLER (SPEARFISH, SD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
Quite a few reviewers appear to have had less than satisfactory experiences with the Haier brand. Perhaps I just lucked out for my own experience has been satisfactory though not quite perfect. I'll outline the performance of the Haier dehumidifier that I purchased just in case any future potential purchaser may wish to factor my observations into his or her purchase decision. Here we go:

I bought the Haier dehumidifier in November 2008, and it worked extremely well until July 2011. For those two years and eight months I was thoroughly pleased with the unit. It was operated continuously in a below-grade 450 square foot basement room with cinder block walls, which tend to let in ground moisture. The room has one doorway open to the rest of the basement, which, because of the slope of the land is not entirely below grade and is, in fact, a walk-out basement. However, inasmuch as there are no windows or other openings in the end room, there is minimal air circulation there, and it always felt a bit damp and smelled musty. According to the hygrometer mounted to the wall, the humidity in the room was typically around 65 percent (50 - 75% being marked as "normal").

The Haier dehumidifier, running constantly on low speed, reduced the humidity quickly and maintained it at 30 to 35 percent. After the initial start-up when it filled more quickly, the catch bucket for the condensation usually needed to be emptied once every three to four days (there being no drain in the room for the drain hose to reach). The unit was somewhat noisy for one occupying the room, somewhat on the order of a cheap window air conditioner in a seedy motel, but it effectively removed moisture from the room and greatly improved the air quality.

After two and a half years of operation, the unit began to emit hotter than normal air, the operating noise increased, and the amount of condensation being produced substantially decreased. A telephone call to the company confirmed that parts were still under the five-year warranty and would be sent upon receipt of a diagnosis of the problem and identification of the part(s) needed by a bona fide appliance servicing company. This is where frustration set in. After calling local appliance repair companies, including one specializing in refrigeration units, and finding that no one is interested in working on dehumidifiers, I decided to surrender the unit to the municipal rubble site, which does recycle metal, rubber and electronics, and to purchase a replacement unit, choosing a Sunpentown Model SD-65E based on user reviews. As the Haier did when new, the Sunpentown is so far doing a fine job of dehumidifying the room down to its minimum setting of 35% and runs more quietly than the Haier did.

Based on the purchase price of the Haier unit and the length of time it operated well, the monthly cost came to $6. In short, I was entirely satisfied with the unit's performance, and I remain satisfied with its prorated monthly cost. On the other hand, I am annoyed that I cannot find a repair shop willing to diagnose the problem and obtain the needed part(s) from the Haier company, and I am unhappy at having to replace the unit after only about two and a half years. I suppose that performance rates a five-star rating from me while longevity rates a two, hence the more-or-less-average three-star rating I've indicated here. We'll see if the Sunpentown is still operating well two and half years hence.

3.0 out of 5 stars haier HDN655E, September 18, 2010
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
Used our HDN655E almost 2 years constantly from April-Oct. Died yesterday.
Manual was usless.
Caviat: I am not a repair man. I am not giving advise. Just telling you what I did.
Panel had no lights regardless what I did.
Unplugged machine.
Removed all of the small external screws (9 maybe) phillips heads.
Unscrewed hose outlet.
Took front of machine off.
On circuit panel is a small blue plastic/rubber cover (approx 2cm in length)
Remove the cover with two fingers.
Underneath is a 12amp-125v cylindrical fuse.
Measures 5mm x 20mm.
Radio shack, auto store, or home depot will have it for about $2.00
Reverse order all set....
NOTE: Although I removed and cleaned the air filter regularly, there was
a great amount of dust/dirt on the coils.
Vacuum and dremel tool with soft plastic bristle brush and 5 min took care of that.
All set...Hope this helps

1.0 out of 5 stars refridgerant leak, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
Did not work from day one, coil does not get cold. My guess is it has a hole somewhere and all the refridgerant has leaked out.
Haven't tried to contact company yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Read This Before You Buy, July 30, 2010
This review is from: Haier - HD656E Dehumidifier - 11.82L (Kitchen)
The first Haier we purchased failed to work properly right out of the box. After contacting the company and sending them the power cord, they shipped a replacement. The second unit was a scratched and dented refurbished model. Haier refused to send a new one even though our appliance was brand new. The second unit worked for about a week, then it started leaking some kind of oily grease which ruined the carpet we had just installed. We'll never purchase a Haier product of any kind again.
