Why it is hard to find a decent toaster remains one of the deep mysteries of humankind. Good toasters made with cheap components that break. Expensive toasters that cannot perform their basic function, ya know, toast bread. It's a toast-lovers minefield with seemingly no hope of green fields (or at least, golden-toasted fields) beyond. We bought this to replace a Rowenta toaster that was also long and narrow, but never worked well. Our choices were limited as it needed to fit in a narrow space behind our cooktop.

This looks lovely in the kitchen and toasts evenly. The variety of settings works well for various breads, although it will take some practice with different bread types to see which setting is best for each. The default setting is fine for standard bread. Crank it up for bagels or rye bread.
In response to another review, the toaster doesn't wait 10 seconds before starting to toast. It gives you 10 seconds to change the setting after putting the bread in, but it begins to heat right away.

We are very satisfied with this toaster compared to the four times more expensive Rowenta that was horrible!

Given the solid reviews here, I figured I would take on a chance on this improbably cheap model. Alas, no. It is not worth even its low price.

Pros:
- reasonably pleasant to look at
- small footprint
- diodes on front offer some sense of how much longer you'll be waiting

Cons:
- Too short! Even ordinary slices of bread do not fit the whole way down. WTF?!
- Doneness setting has to be reset every time you hit cancel. Want to toast something a bit more? Great. Toast some more, hit cancel and then have to reset for the next piece of toast. Need to reorient your toast because it was too tall? Great. Toast some more, hit cancel and then have to reset for the next piece of toast. Repeat ad infinitum.
- Without any sensors, the toaster doesn't seem to know that it just toasted something. If you live alone, it might do a decent job on the first piece of toast. Have a spouse? Her toast is likely to come out incinerated even with the same setting. Good morning, dear.
- Mine happened to arrive with a dent on the front, making it a bit less pleasant to look at. Although I don't assume that every one is shipped with a dent, it does offer some insight into the quality of the materials.

If you enjoy constantly rotating your toast, constantly fooling with a dial, and living in constant fear of blackened toast, you may be happy with this toaster. If you have somewhat higher standards for your morning routine, I urge you to look elsewhere. Indeed, I plead with you to look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Toaster, February 18, 2010

This is a nice looking and efficient toaster, which I bought to replace a good looking but crap performing one. This toaster has easy to read browning settings [string of LED lights] that count down as the toasting process progresses. I'l admit thats a bit gimmicky but it looks cool and is easy to read from a distance.
Functionaly this toaster browns evenly [especially compared to my last one] and the timing is constant delivering consistant results. The single slot design is great for me as I often get "wide" bakery type breads that dont fit in the conventional slots well.

I recommend this toaster to anyone but especially if you toast wide breads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Toaster, March 7, 2010

The toaster works well for me (about 5 months). The default 5 blue light setting produces perfect toast for "normal" bread. Long sourdough slices simply require resetting to 8. Obviously you have to experiment a bit to find out the proper setting for the various types of bread you are using but once you do the toaster seems to be very repeatable. Personally I like the light system in that I know where the toaster is in its cycle. Once in a while one slot is not enough (grand kids in town) but I kept our old long two slot toaster for those occasions. Looks good, performs well, maybe a little expensive but overall I would recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nightmare on returning to Haier, January 12, 2011
This review is from: Haier TST120SS Stainless-Steel Long-Slot 2-Slice Digital Toaster (Kitchen)
Toaster stop working with in 3 months. Contacted Haier & followed exchange policy with 6" of the toaster cord with plug, serial#, copy of receipt and check for 14.99 in October. Followed up 6 weeks later and was told they did not recieve it and try back in a couple weeks. Called back in mid-December & was told to send in another check along with receipt (cord now not available sent in with original request. Next day my bank statement showed they cashed my 1st check 2 weeks earlier. Called them again and was told they would not cash 2nd check and would be sending out unit in a day or 2. Never received anything - toaster, phone call, nothing. Now the 2nd check was cash 12/31. Called today and they said they show they cash 1 of the checks but was waiting on getting the 6" cord which was with the 1st check they cash of which they said they never recieved. Now I need to send they a copy of the 2 checks just to get my money back (no exchange because they lost the cord I sent them). To top it all off they admitted they were going to keep the money and it was up to me to follow up. Unbelievable! DO DOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HAIER! Haier America if you read these opinion's my claim # is 678855. I can not get to someone who will make this right!

We were looking for a long slot (narrow width) toaster in SS and found this one. It works great for slices of different widths and has blue LED lights to count down to finished toast. It looks good on the counter top and does a nice even job of toasting bread, english muffins, and bagels.

This toaster is attractive and performs as advertised. It is a space saver. It is simple to operate and adjusts easily to the way you like your items toasted. It has one long slot that accommodates large or small pieces of bread or bagels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome space saving toaster, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Haier TST120SS Stainless-Steel Long-Slot 2-Slice Digital Toaster (Kitchen)
We've been using his toaster now for several months and it's the best toaster we've ever used; super even toasting of bread.

1) Total space saver on your counter top which was our first consideration. We set it long wise along the backsplash and the toaster sits within 6" of the backsplash and only 14-3/8" wide leaving all the rest of the counter top for other things. Terrific!

2) The stainless finish is beautiful and the blue LEDs are not only striking but functional for setting desired toast darkness. They also count down the toasting to finish. e.g. 5 LEDS are lit, then 4, then 3, ... then none and POP UP! Easy to see from across the room. What is not obvious until you actually turn the rotary knob more or less is the genius of the blue LEDs lighing up so you can easily see the darkness setting you've chosen even if the counter-top is dark. Especially handy if you've pushed the unit all the way to the backsplash and the kitchen is dark at all. Lasty, both ends, feet, and cord are black and not very noticeable if it sitting long-wise along a black-splash. Also both ends have a very slight curve to them which works well for both a curved or square style look depending on your preference. Not to boxy or curved.

3) It has a bun warming tray that sits on the top although we've never used it; pretty sure it would work very well, but since it's a separate piece, we've stowed it away maybe never to be found timely when we need it.

4) The cord stays out of the way and to desired length by winding up excess slack on the bottom of the unit.

5) It has a convenient cancel button and a defrost button. Honestly we have not used the defrost button but simply use the cancel button after the LED's count down a bit.

6) I read a couple of reviews that were negative about a couple things that were not fully described with much detail.

First, the unit does NOT wait 10 seconds before toasting, it actually gives you 10 seconds of initial toasting for you to adjust the desired temperature by turning the large rotary knob, and the unit remembers the darkness setting. e.g. 3, 4, or 5 LED's of darkness.

Second, if toasting many pieces of bread, one set after the other, you'll want to adjust the second and beyond toasting darkness level down a couple of settings as the toaster is already hot from the first toasting. Like most toasters...the darkness settings are based on time so if the toaster is already hot from the 1st toasting it needs less time to toast the second and beyond. I"m guessing that is how most toasters work. We didn't find our personal learning curve to be a manufacturing defect. Maybe some toasters do this better than others...not sure.

Third, the unit does fit typical and wide bread sizes easily. The only thing we had to work out was unusually oblong pieces of french bread. Two slices side by side were longer than the slot, so I simply inverted the second slice beside the first and it fit and toasted fine. No rocket science required.

Forth, the unit does not throw the toast completely out of the toaster UNLESS you only toast one unusually small and thin slice of bread. Pretty funny actually. We once toasted one slice of very small and thinner than normal Italian bread. It ejected the toast out of the toaster and it landed behind he unit completely hidden. Took me a few minutes to figure out where it went. The unit does NOT launch a normal single slice of bread, just the super small thin Italian slices. The reason is simple. The ejection spring system has to accommodate an average single to two-slices of toast. Considering it only has one slot...there is almost no way for the engineers to compensate for the weight of only one small and thin slice. If you only want to toast one small or thin slice... consider record the ejecting toast on your cell phone, put it on You Tube, and see if it will go viral for fun.

7) Honestly the most beautiful, space saving, fun toaster we've ever had. The blue LEDs really create a fresh style statement making your normal boring toaster cool and an included smaller than normal one-slice Mission-Space toasting function... Seriously, what more could anyone ask for?

Works awesome for us.

Scrolling through the Amazon toaster listings, I noticed this model, which has one long slot instead of two--plenty of space for my Trader Joe's Whole Wheat Tuscane Pane, which I previously had to cut in half to fit into my old toaster. It also takes two waffles when my grandchildren spend the night, and has a unique and attractive look on the counter as well. It works fine and I highly recommend it.

Love this toaster. I like crispy toast and in one try not twice in the toaster. This looks great and it's a great price as well.
