Amazon.com Review

Betsy Snyder's first board book as an author-illustrator, Haiku Baby follows a tiny bluebird, the book's would-be protagonist, as it visits its various animal companions--from an elephant that shades the bird with a parasol to a fox in a meadow and a whale in the ocean. The little bird's story is told primarily in pictures, and through the book's six haiku: rain, flower, sun, leaf, snow, and--of course, it would not be a board book without--the moon, making it ideal for the bedtime line-up. Adorable collage-cut illustrations work nicely with the haiku form to give the book a whimsical, yet serene, feel. And the haiku are light and fun without being too cutesy. Index tabs on the right margin, with pictures that tie to each of the poems (leaf, raindrop, snowflake, etc.), create a unique look, and make it easy for toddlers to flip through the pages on their own without having them stick together like they can with other board books. Snyder excels at visual storytelling and short forms, possibly a talent she honed as a designer/illustrator in the kids' greeting card business. In the world of board books, this slender little volume really stands out. --Heidi Broadhead

Great way to teach children about haiku!

My eight month old son is not as in love with it as I am, but I think it's one of my favorites of his books.

Our little guy loves the pictures and the haikus flow very nicely.

Format: Board book
This little board book looks rather unassuming at first. Parents may pass over it in favor of slightly larger volumes, or those board books with familiar stories and characters. Given a chance, however, haiku baby is a delightful addition to a baby's library.

Each 2-page layout in the book (seven in all) features a different haiku about a natural element, such as rain, or sun or the moon. These haiku follow the traditional format of a certain number of syllables per line, but the actual content tends to be livelier for the younger audience. The author makes use of onomatopoeic words as well as animal characters and exclamations. The result is warm and engaging without becoming overly cute and keeping the character of haiku. Rather than the usual page structure, each page of the board book has an outstanding tab on the side that allows the reader to thumb through to the different pages. Each tab has a symbol for the particular haiku on that page layout. For instance, on the autumnal page with a haiku about a leaf, the tab has the image of a small gingko leaf. These tabs will help youngsters still learning how to work their fingers learn to turn the pages.

The art work in this book is whimsical and colorful; each page features a different animal and a different color scheme. The pages appear to be created by a mix of cut outs and possibly watercolors, there are no bold outlines here and it gives the whole book a softer feel. Each page has the repeating image of a small blue bird that appears originally on the front cover, providing a challenge to older children to find the bird in each scene. In addition to the actual artwork, each page includes the main poetic element represented by a Chinese character.

I love this author and illustrator! I'm getting all her books! This book has great artwork, my son (6 months now) loves the bright colors. And the haiku's are short (of course) and sweet and so much fun to read. My son's favorite line is "plunk, plop, belly flop" because I pat my hand on his tummy in rhythm. I only wonder why she put the hippopotamus on a snow mountaintop, but that gives me something to talk to my son about later, how hippos are definitely NOT mountain climbers!

My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. The pictures are beautiful and each page is actually a work of art. He also loves finding the little blue bird on every page. The book is made of slightly thinner cardboard than most board books though so if you have a chewer, you might want to save this one until they are a little older!

This is such a beautiful little book. My baby got "Haiku Baby" as a present when he was 5 months old. He has been loving it since then. He is now 10 months old and asks us to read this book by picking it up. We enjoy the beautiful illustrations, which name each animal and nature element, and we look for the little bluebird on each page. I highly recommend this book for all babies. It's a great baby shower present, too.

I wish there were more books like this one. My son is just over a year old, and it's one of his favorite books. It's also one of my favorites to read to him:
- The illustrations are attractive.
- The pages are cut on the edge to make tabs; this makes them easy for him to turn.
- Haiku has enough words per 2 page spread to be interesting to a one year old.
- The haiku is cute.

It can be really hard to find books that baby loves AND parents can stand reading constantly. Haiku Baby is one that my kiddo and I both really enjoy. The illustrations are charming, and the haikus are lovely and have a nice rhythm to them. I like that it ends with a "goodnight" message so that it works as a bedtime or naptime book. This book has become a part of our daily reading rotation. The pages aren't as thick as some other board books we have, but so far they have held up well. Highly recommend.

This book is a great children's book -- the pictures are bright and attractive, the characters are cute and the poetry is soothing and pleasant. What's really impressive, though, is that the poems are actually true to the spirit of haiku -- they are nature themed, seasonal, use a lot of onomatopaeia, and capture brief moments that also represent greater themes. Great way to teach children about haiku!

This book is a breath of fresh air, relaxing, beautiful, fun pictures but nice for mommy and baby both. Some kid's books can become very tedious even annoying to read over and over again. I love the poems in this one and my daughter loves the pictures. It is a win-win.
