3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing - (WORD LIST) October 31, 2011
Format:Misc. Supplies
I am not a haiku master by any means, but I've done research into the genre and love trying to write in the spirit of haiku, which is not simply a 5-7-5 syllable poem of any subject! It's something much more specific than that. The words on these cubes by no means fit the true spirit of haiku and if you're looking for something with a lot of nature words, you're out of luck. Many words are things like "Thugs" "Hmmmmm" "Etc." "Mommy" and more. Words that I would rarely use in regular poetry, let alone haiku. I will include a word list below so people will know what they are buying beforehand.

Also, one person mentioned that the cubes have a blank side, and another person mentioned this is intentional so you can display what you write in the box. Personally I think this is ridiculous! I was expecting 6 words per cube, and feel a bit cheated. I think it's pretty silly to try to display a poem in the box, but that's me. To each his own I suppose. Buyers should be aware of this fact though. They should also be aware that two cubes have little "ideas" on them like "My Childhood" or "A Tirade About" or "Our World" instead of words.

If this kit had been labeled more along the lines of "poetry cubes" or as an "idea starter/writing prompt" kit I'd be happier with it. I was expecting something more akin to haiku. I will probably keep it though as it is fun to roll the cubes (annoying to have to re-roll blank side up ones! and see what you can come up with. Would be really fun to do with kids too.

Okay, here's the word list!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well made... works as an oracle as well. November 14, 2010
Format:Misc. Supplies
This set is very well made out of an off-white plastic similar in weight and feel to a nice set of dominos. The main problem in using them comes from trying to cast all 63 at once. There are too many to shake and cast in your hands and the box is far too small to be used for this purpose. The box is nice and strudy but the plastic case that actually holds them is not and unlikely to survive very long. Since the top row of dice protudes above the box rim and no cover is provided, you will likely have to find another container for them. I recommend making or buying a nice sized cloth bag. I made one, and this allowed me to shake them and cast them randomly or have friends pick cubes at random allowing variations on the game.

You can also use this set as a synchronous oracle, picking a word or series of words in response to a question or as stimulous for writer's block. I actually liked the idea of having a blank side because drawing a blank could be used to suggest an end to a series of words.
