Book Description

September 2000 4 and upP and up
Just what does a president do? In this companion to the award-winning The Flag We Love, young readers will discover the important part a president plays in our nation. Unique among children's books about the presidents, this concise and fact-filled volume is organized around the duties and roles of the president. Each two-page spread focuses on a president who helped to define one aspect of the presidency. Thomas Jefferson, for example, added to the territory of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase and added a power to the presidency not mentioned in the Constitution. Examples of other presidents in action follow, with every president mentioned at least once, giving a sense of the role they played in our history.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-An introduction to aspects of the presidency and some of the men who have held the position. Fourteen double-page spreads examine such themes as the responsibilities of the chief executive as stated in the Constitution; "Enforcing the Laws"; and "Getting Elected." Each subject is introduced with a specific example of a president, such as Abraham Lincoln in "Leaders in War." Two brief paragraphs that relate some facts about his presidency and his position in the Civil War are followed by one-to-two line mentions of other presidents in a similar role, e.g., George Bush in the Persian Gulf. Opposite each informational page is an illustration of the lead subject against colorful background images of the event mentioned. (Lincoln is shown before a soldier with a torn flag, a slave picking cotton, and a figure representing General Grant.) A combination index/list of presidents (with their terms of office, party affiliation, and birth and death dates) is included. Unfortunately, the rudimentary information offered won't be enough to satisfy report writers and the text is not as engaging as Judith St. George's more personal So You Want to Be President? (Philomel, 2000).-Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
