The members of Avenged Sevenfold were well into work on the album of their lives. Then, in an instant, their lives changed. The Rev had died. They hadn’t just lost their drummer. They’d lost a family member – a guy who was best friends with vocalist M. Shadows since second grade in the Orange County town of Huntington Beach, and with guitarist Synyster Gates since fifth ... First off, I've been a fan of these guys for a long time. Unlike a lot of A7X fans, I actually loved Nightmare. However, this album is a totally different approach. Musically, it's much simpler than Nightmare. Gone are the crazy drum fills from Mike Portnoy. Songs like 'Doing Time' almost remind me of Guns 'N Roses, Appetite-era . Never thought I'd say that! The whole album has a Metallica 'Black Album' feel to it. Straightforward drumbeats, guitar riffs, vocals. No crazy time changes, breakdowns, or anything like that. Usually, this would be a negative, in my eyes. It really works on this album, though! The dueling guitar solos (in basically every song) are amazing.

Oh, I almost forgot, the album itself SOUNDS AWESOME. It's well-recorded. It doesn't have the normal, ungodly clipping of most metal albums, nowadays (or any genre, for that matter). No loudness wars here. Excellent sound quality. Listen to it on something besides iPod headphones and you'll understand what I mean. Great dynamics. Crystal clear, no muddiness, excellent instrument separation.

I love it. Simple as that. If you're a fan of Metallica, or any metal, I highly suggest that you check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars A7X & their new sound.... August 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am not your average A7X fan, until a few years ago I had not even heard of them. Then one day, visiting the grandchildren I was asked to play a "rock band" type of game, since my ability with instruments was little I was handed the microphone. My introduction too A7X was "Afterlife"....I was hooked. I have listened too and enjoyed most of their material. I make a habit of listening to the entire album, niot just the "hits"....and with new albums I find it almost mandatory to give it three listens before I make a decision.....The first time I heard "Hali to the King" (single) I really didn't care for it, now I really enjoy it. On my first go around with the entire album I was somewhat displeased. My second time around I grew to like it, on my third go around I am a fan. As a 54 year old, classic rock fan, I highly endorse this album.

Edit 10/4/2013

After listening to this cd multiple times I have come too really like a couple of the "ballards" Crimson Day and Acid Rain are stand outs......

Avenged has basically written the album that Metallica should have written after the black album. It's mid-tempo metal that sounds quite a bit like old school Metallica. I like it, but you might be disappointed if you go into it expecting the same old A7X. The closest you will get is on the bonus track, St. James. That actually sounds like older material.

For everyone claiming this is due to the Rev not having anything to do with this album, the new drummer sucks, whatever: Go read some interviews. This is what the band was aiming for. They wanted to do an album with more of a classic metal feel. If you think the new drummer, Arin Ilejay, can't play the old style, you are mistaken. Take a listen to the single they did in 2012 for Black Ops II, Carry On. Or listen to them in concert. He's good. He's no Rev, but who is?

4.0 out of 5 stars More Amazing A7X to Celebrate! September 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
WOW - that's all I can say, wow! Avenged Sevenfold's new endeavor is another triumph to savor and celebrate! Somehow, these guys keep finding a way to give us new takes on the metal/hard rock genre that both entices and delights.... and the biggest wonder is that is doesn't sound old or like a repeat - the music all sounds new and unique.... great music to enjoy!

For those of you who didn't buy the deluxe version of the CD, you definitely need to go out of your way to find a copy of the "Saint James" bonus track on that deluxe CD version - It's the crowning jewel of this album, and easily my favorite with a 5-star hook that satisfies to the very end - Enjoy folks! *****

Avenged Sevenfold did an amazing job with this album you have the mixture of heavy metal jams like Metallica, rock songs like three days grace, and shinedown. But personally what got me with this album by this band was the not sticking to all metal or all rock they use different sounds to make all their fans excited for the music. 1. Shepherd of Fire is a great rock song with powerful lyrics about our weakness as humans (pride, lust, hate) so forth. 2. Hail to the King is another example of hard rock metal riffs with guitar riffs done by an amazing artist who knows how to work those gutiars "Taste of Fear, when the henchmen come". 3. Doing Time different style of sound and lyrics and it really worked for the band if you listen to it with an open mind. 4. This Means War good gutiar introduction can really feel the pain in the lead singer's voice and how far he will go to make it right. But doesn't trust anyone ever again. 5. Requiem amazing vocals speaks of the world up "in flames" and also enjoy the extra chours beginning and end of the song. 6. Crimson Day softer song by the band "slow the passing day" sounds like a song you would deicate to someone you love "so dearly" "created just for you." 7. Heretic "Turning witches and saints into ashes" "Marching to find Hertetic blood." Truly a great song both rock metal music and lyrics wise reminds me of the Salem Witch Trails that I wrote a paper on in college. 8. Coming Home talks about the journey and sites the singer as seen while trying to make his way back home so that he ends up coming home (sidenote love to meet the gutiarist for this band amazing job he did on this whole album). 9.
