Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this day and age of political correctness, some people may be offended by this book's title, even after, upon closer scrutiny, they learn it is a publication about the National Football League's Washington Redskins. Written by football historian Whittingham, author of 27 books including What a Game They Played, the study chronicles the club from its early days in 1932 as the Boston Braves, through the move in 1936 to the nation's capital, right up to the present day. The title includes chapters on the club's heritage, greatest runners, receivers, defenders, and coaches, as well as the Super Bowl years, plus a unique section on the Redskins' spirit. Without a doubt, this is a nostalgic tome that features both vintage and contemporary photos. Football enthusiasts, especially Redskin fans, will enjoy the book. Buy where demand warrants. From the Inside Flap

In Hail Redskins, preeminent football historian Richard Whittingham has brought together vintage and contemporary photographs and a colorful blend of facts, features, and profiles to create a book no Redskins fan should be without. Tracing the club from its humble beginnings in Boston through its successful move to our nation’s capital and beyond, this book covers the championship teams of the thirties and forties, the rise and triumph of George Allen’s "Over-the-Hill Gang," all the way to the current crop of promising players under new Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer. With detailed profiles of the greatest runners, passers, defenders, and coaches in Redskins history, as well as detailed descriptions of the Skins’ three Super Bowl victories and two pre–Super Bowl championships, this is a must-read for any true Washington fan.

Hail Redskins will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at legendary Redskins’ milestones such as:

· the 1937 championship game against the Chicago Bears, when the Skins, led by rookie Sammy Baugh, won the NFL Championship during their first year in Washington, D.C.

· the 1942 championship game, when the underdog Redskins came from behind to once again shock the Chicago Bears and take their second NFL Championship

· the coming of "St. Vince," the legendary Vince Lombardi, who scared the players into shape in 1969

· The arrival of George Allen and the building of the extraordinary "Over-the-Hill Gang," who would take the Skins to their first conference title and their first shot at the Super Bowl

· Super Bowl XXVI, when Coach Joe Gibbs’ tough Redskins squad forced their way to victory despite a nullified touchdown, a mishandled snap on a field-goal attempt, and multiple interceptions

Alongside these many exciting memories are detailed profiles of the greatest Redskins players of all times, including Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann, Art Monk, John Riggins, Bobby Mitchell, Charley Taylor, Dave Butz, Mark Rypien, Stephen Davis, Darrell Green, and many others—as well as the coaches who led them to the top.

With over 100 archival photos and in-depth analysis of every Redskins championship since 1937, Hail Redskins is a must-have for fans both young and old—as fascinating and enjoyable as the victory at Super Bowl XXVI. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
