This review is from: Hair (1997 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
In celebration of this show's 30th anniversary, HAIR 1967-1997 revamps and updates Rado, Ragni, and McDermot's musical with mixed results. The cast of this Copenhagen production does a fine job in the vocal department despite some obvious phonetic flubs and broken English. (...My countrieS `tis of thee.) However, a few of the numbers suffer from almost groan-worthy vocal acrobatics leaving me to fear that the singers might have been performing without a net! Notable highlights include `Black Boys/White Boys' which stays fairly true to the original spirit of the songs while giving a bit of a Motown injection to the arragement. `Air' gets a jazzy lift complete with a new big band horn arrangement. And `Easy To Be Hard' is simply lovely. But listener beware: `Colored Spade,' `Sodomy,' and `Ain't Got No' are almost unbearable and unrecognizable compared to their original incarnations. The Original Broadway Cast recording remains the best available version of the show, but this CD will please most fans. The fact that it is one of the few recordings that contains a fairly true-to-form version of the song `Dead End' makes it a worthwhile endeavor for the HAIR fanatic.
