3.0 out of 5 stars Probably fine for an older child...
My daughter is 6 1/2 and we've been struggling with trich for about 4 months now. This book may be helpful for an older, very motivated child or adolescent. Though my daughter reads far above her grade level it did not hold her interest and the suggestions are too involved and complex for her to follow. I'll put it away for now in case we need it later, though I hope we...

At long last, a self-help book for young trichotillomania sufferers - one that is written in plain common-sense language and that allows each user to tailor the program to his or her own needs. The information is highly accessible to children, and is based upon the latest understandings of this serious disorder. As a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Trichotillomania Learning Center (a national organization for sufferers and professionals), I recommend this valuable workbook without hesitation, not only to my younger patients, but to parents and therapists as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for pullers of all ages, May 16, 2000
By A Customer
Excellent behavior modification resource for pullers of all ages. While the format of the workbook is geared toward children and adolescents, the underlying principles and techniques used in the book will help all pullers. The authors identify 6 main reasons we pull, then lead us through exercises in which the puller identifies their particular triggers related to each of those 6 reasons, and tailors a program that addresses their own unique pulling patterns. For example, what situations or environments do you pull in? Are you aware or unaware when you are pulling? Does a need to fiddle or to have something in your mouth play a part in your pulling? The book helps you identify you patterns and gives concrete suggestions on how to deal with them. The authors are very understanding and compassionate.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book and a terrific resource, November 19, 1999
By A Customer
To the authors: I have read The Hair Pulling Habit and You and I love it! It is the perfect resource for adolescents with trichotillomania.Their parents will also benefit from reading it, as will adults who are struggling against the hair-pulling habit. It is amazing that you were able to take something as complicated as behavior therapy for trichotillomania and make it so reader-friendly. Clearly, this manual will become THE resource not only for patients, but also for the clinicians and therapists who treat them.

One of the most helpful aspects of the manual is that it guides the reader through the steps of problem assessment, treatment, and maintenance in a low-key, logical manner. Teens won't be scared off by the enormity of the task, because you've broken it down into manageable sized, "puzzle" pieces. Both the illustrations and the text are appealing. Taken all together, it's a wonderful book and a terrific resource. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who will love it!

As a teenager suffering from Trich, I have found this book to be very helpful in giving me strategies and a plan to help me get rid of this habit. This book is full of facts about Trich as well, that I found very interesting and useful. The book is written not only for sufferers of Trich but also for parents of children with Trich, and therapists working with patients with Trich. The book is easy to read and entertaining. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This valuable book fills a gaping void, February 5, 2001

This review is from: The Hair Pulling "Habit" and You: How to Solve the Trichotillomania Puzzle, Revised Edition (Paperback)
"The Hair Pulling 'Habit' and You: How to Solve the Trichotillomania Puzzle," by Ruth Golomb and Sherrie Vavrichek, is a long overdue and welcome addition to the field of popular psychiatry self-help books. This book offers education regarding trichotillomania, and practical, easily implemented techniques. It addresses one of the most underrecognized problems in psychiatry and offers much hope to one the most underserved clinical populations. What it has to offer is especially valuable given that many sufferers are either too ashamed of their problem to pursue professional intervention, or are unable to identify a knowledgable professional in their area.

This self-instructional text is easily readable and provides fun yet instructional exercises which demonstrate the major behavioral treatment techniques. The organization of the book is in a series of self-contained modules which succeed in breaking down what can be an overwhelming and complex problem into a series of simple, focussed steps.

This text fills a gaping void in the educational self-help literature available to chronic hair pullers. No doubt it will help alleviate the suffering of many of its victims. As a co-author (along with Drs. Stein and Christenson) of the newly published book "Help For Hair Pullers," I greatly appreciate the insight and clarity that these authors have brought to the field with regards to the treatment of trichotillomania in children and teens.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the BEST help we have gotten with Trich. Buy this book!, November 9, 2006
This review is from: The Hair Pulling "Habit" and You: How to Solve the Trichotillomania Puzzle, Revised Edition (Paperback)
This book is awesome for parents because it allows you to see Trich from the child's perspective and helps you understand WHY they do this to themselves. It gives wonderful advice to parents and it gives more strategies than you can imagine for this kids to use and they WORK! I also purchased the E book called "What's wrong with pullling my hair out" and it did NOTHING for my child or for me. All it talked about was convince yourself that you can stop and you can.....well Duh. That didnt help because my child knew he could stop but he didnt know how to make himself stop and it was not something he WANTED to be doing in the first place. This book is great for children and parents, I cannot stress enough how much this book has helped our family. My son pulled his hair for a year and a half and after reading this book and doing the strategies, within 2 months he had reduced the pulling by I would say 65%. I actually did some research online and found that his hair pulling my be a form of a tic from taking Adderall.....so after taking the meds for 6 years, I took him off.....he has STOPPED pulling his hair completely!!! His grades have improved, his personality is wonderful (he used to not have one at all on meds)and his whole life is 110% better...he is HAPPY! I know that has nothing to do with this book, but his doctor said many kids who have Trich are also ADHD and on meds....parents.....do your research on those ADHD meds....[...]
