Laughed out loud!,

This book is great, quick read. I disagree that the Biblical references took away from this book -- if anything, I thought it drove home the book's message: Children learn from from what you do, not from what you say.
Merurer tells a story about trying to sit down and tell the story of David & Goliath to his two young sons... it inevitably turns into a fiasco of bodily-function-humor and when the boys finally get the message, it turns out to be as a result of something they observed their Dad doing when he didn't realize they were paying attention. Half way through the book, I thought back and couldn't remember the author having come right out with a step-by-step... then I realized that he gets "it" across to the reader the same way he gets "it" across to his boys... with his actions.

One dad's adventures, but it seemed pretty tame (and not the best writing either). Also, it had a decidely Christain-bent which I didn't expect.

They left out the word Christain from the title,

Not what I expected. The book was funny and an enjoyable read. But it should be called the Hair-Raising Joys of Raising Christain Boys. Not what I was looking for.

This is a great beach book or a fun little gift for anyone expecting a boy. Laugh out loud funny at times. My only complaint is the author's dependence on bible references. We get it. You're religious. But even as a catholic, I found it a bit preachy at times. It took away from the humor of the book.

Such a fun read!,

I LOVE this book and am planning on buying several to pass out to my friends with boys. I'm not sure how other readers think the helpful parenting truths seem to "take away" from the book. I am always looking for great suggestions in parenting. This book was fun, light-hearted and laced with great ideas for parenting.

I picked up the book at the pharmacy since the picture on the cover and the title seemed to be what my life as a dad was! The Prologue was really funny and I thought it will be some good lighthearted reading. Love the authors hilarious style of writing.. but then it started and reached a crescendo at about chapter 6 or so... preaching. Christian or otherwise.. This is what I was not expecting to find... Too much faith based conversation. Further it reduces.. but pretty much at the end of each chapter threes some preaching-ish paragraph. Passing references to God etc would have been fine - but the extent to which Dave (the author) goes to - for me it took way the pure fun of a hilarious reading experience.
Otherwise.. this is a excellent topic. Loved the "diaper" chapter.. And yes boys are weird. I have one girl too and I know what I am talking about :) Climbing on top of a freezer in the grocery shop seems perfectly logical to boys - not to girls. Also the "Hair" chapter was nice too. reminded me of my hair days.. Some one uploaded my high school group photos on Facebook... and I wanted to hide my face in shame! |
