Believe me when I tell you that this is a good book and a must have for the kinky, curly, wavy haired girls. It is written in plain English so you don't have to be knowledgeable about or licensed in hair or hair care in order to benefit from it. I read the first 52 pages in one sitting and wanted to keep reading. Mr. Dickey did a great job explaining about our hair...

Hair Rules is good if you know absolutely nothing about taking care of your curly or kinky hair. Dickey excels at giving general advice and information about products and simple maintenance, but if you're looking for detailed instructions on how to style your hair at home, this is NOT the book for you. Dickey refuses to recommend any specific products (not even brands),...

Mr. Dickey did a great job explaining about our hair. He also talks about relaxers and what they do to the hair. He encourages women to embrace and care for their unique textures. I like how he simultaneously entertains and educates in this book. I learned a few tips/tricks of the trade. [...] But for once a stylist is NOT afraid to give out secrets of the industry. Dickey recognizes and talks about the beauty of kinky, curly, and wavy hair. At one point he even wrote that his colleagues would do well to recognize the beauty of our texture as well. Finally a book that is written by a stylist who will tell you, GIRL LEAVE THAT RELAXER ALONE and let me beautify your kinks and curls. I give his book a big fat 5 stars.
Free your MIND and your hair will follow!!

2.0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
Hair Rules is good if you know absolutely nothing about taking care of your curly or kinky hair. Dickey excels at giving general advice and information about products and simple maintenance, but if you're looking for detailed instructions on how to style your hair at home, this is NOT the book for you. Dickey refuses to recommend any specific products (not even brands), so this book is even less useful than, say, a monthly women's magazine such as Essence or Shape. Also, the photos are mostly black and white, and lack any kind of detailed captions and close-ups that would help readers replicate these styles at home. Borrow it from the library or buy it used.

This brief, simple book provides an excellent practical guide to pampering African-American hair, or any ethnic hair that glories in its curls. I found that the suggestions about daily rinsing, generous use of conditioners, and nightly braiding have helped my hair looks glossy, curly, fresh, and happy. Use of all-natural products from Carol's Daughter also makes a world of difference.

I'm black too and I love this book! I still refer to it regularly. As I have been growing out my hair from its very short natural, I have found this book to be invaluble in helping me to condition and maintain my new curls. While it's possible that this book may help black women more so than others, I have had numerous conversations with my caucasian friends of wavy/curly hair and have found that our issues/solutions have been very similar. So overall I do think this book can be useful to all. I also look forward to exploring the other books mentioned by the other reviewers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hair Rules is Not for Everyone, May 27, 2003

This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
I purchased this book thinking it was about all women with curly hair, because the dust jacket and introduction leads you to believe that all women with curly hair can benefit from reading it. While this is probably true to some extent, its primary focus is on African American women. I would give it 3 stars for all women and 5 stars for African American women. So depending on your hair type, this book may or may not be a useful tool in caring for your curly locks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! Truly good advice for kinky-haired girls!, September 21, 2004
This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
I have spent years trying to find good, solid, usable advice from a knowledgeable expert. I followed the advice I found in magazines, advice from stylists who only knew how to handle relaxed hair (and who handled it terribly at that), and anecdotal advice from friends and relatives. As soon as I started reading "Hair Rules!", I felt like the author was speaking directly to me! This book instantly became my hair bible, and I refer to it frequently to keep up my hair care regimen. Following A. Dickey's advice, my hair is healthy and strong with a nice luster. If you have Afro-textured hair that you're trying to grow long and strong, following the advice in this book will definitely help to get you there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for healthy hair, June 23, 2003

The best hair care book I've come across yet! This book is comprehensive but simplistic. It is the first book I've seen that teaches me, as a black woman, how to take care of my curly/frizzy hair. He includes hair grooming for natural hair styles. There's also an incredibly helpful section that teaches you how to shop for products and how to use them, no matter if you wear natural or relaxed styles. He also gives guidance on the "taboo" subjects of wigs, weaves, and hairpieces. He doesn't push any products--unlike other books--and his only interest is in sharing his wealth of knowledge. I love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Hair Care Information, October 1, 2005
This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
This book is EXCEPTIONAL! Dickey focuses on the basics: all around hair health and good products. What is so useful about this book is that Dickey focuses on not being afraid of your hair. He encourages you to really get to know your own hair through trial and error to see what works best for you. He doesn't drop names or highlight specific products or brands but TEACHES you what ingredients are key for your hair, so you can find what works for any budget. I have read another hair book recently and rather than being useful it was just a marketing tool for the writer. Dickey's book is the best!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but Overrated, February 2, 2005
This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
This is a decent book, but its highly overrated. If you've bought ethnic hair care books before, you might be be disappointed by this one. If not, its a good primer for any newcomer to ethnic/afro hair care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair (Paperback)
I was able to read this book in a day, that is how facinating and exciting it was. Filled with crucial and useful information about curls. Most importantly, Dickey "appreciates" natural hair and doesn't use his book to promote texturizers and relaxers and some "natural experts" do. So often, I have found writers try to impose upon you the things you are avoiding; Chemicals. I loved it. I am impressed, this is not someone who makes assumptions and writes a book, he knows hair, especially curl hair. A great read a worth every star.
