Product Description

What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy s mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I m a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). Features Enhanced Cd Includes Video Karaoke, 'Run And Tell That' Video Documentary And 'Zac Efron Becomes Link Larkin' Video Documentary.

This is the best cd ever! It SOOO much better than the original single disc version! The second disc has alot great songs. My favorite is I can wait. The only bad thing is that it doesn't have Big, Blonde and Beautiful(Reprise) Velma Only Version that is on the 2-disc dvd. Other than that it is ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although the music is the same as in other albums, the second CD it's a good one. It has excellent pieces played by the composers, and "You can't stop the beat" instrumental is great. Those songs neither played in the movie nor in the live musical are included here. Good pair of CDs!

Hairspray is an excellent film with equally excellent music. The music, which was composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is a complete knockout and the ensemble cast deliver the goods. This collector's editon features an extra disc which features a song peformed by Nikki Blonsky, which was cut from the film, entitled "I Can Wait", as well as demos of songs which did make it into the film and various other recordings specially made for this album. The CD is great value for money and any Hairspray fan will love it! The album also includes a booklet containing lyrics as well as stickers and photocards of the cast of characters. Amazing! :]

They gave me this album for my birthday. I loved the movie and i loved the soundtrack collector's album as well. It's ORIGINAL and the disc can be played everywhere. The album is best for school dances & parties!
It contains 2 discs, 1 informative little book with all the words of the songs, stickers with little stars (for kids) and 5 double-sided collectible illustrated glossy cards with movie heros (Tracy Turnblad / Link Larkin, Edna Turnblad / Wilbur Turnblad, Penny Pingleton / Seaweed Stubbs, Corny Collins / Motormouth Maybell, Amber Von Tussle / Velma Von Tussle).
On Amazon site, 2nd cd description there's a mess up.
EXTRAS are:
1) I can wait,
2) Breakout,
3) Boink - Boink,
4) Trouble On the Line,
5) Mr Pinky's Theme.
OUTAKES & ALTERNATIVES are:
6) Mrs Von Tussle says,
7) Save Your Applause 'Til the End,
8) Turn Back The Hand Of Time,

10) It Ain't Over 'Til the Fat Lady sings,

12) Ladies Choice,
13) Welcome To The 60s
14) Run And Tell That
15) You Can't Stop The Beat

If you just liked the movie, buy the cheaper soundtrack with 1 disc. But if you are a musical fan then buy the 2-disc collector's edition. It's money worth!

If you saw the original Broadway version of Hairspray, I think you'll prefer that soundtrack recording, even though that version doesn't quite sound like they did it in a recording studio.

If you saw the Movie version of Hairspray only, then you'll probably be happy with this recording. I do prefer John Travolta's Mrs Turnbladt to the Broadway's character's voice, but I prefer Matthew Morrison (Mr Shue from Glee) as Link on the Broadway soundtrack over Zac Efron on this Movie soundtrack. The Broadway version for Penny is better too.

If you like the Movie version, try to find the original Broadway version of the show, because I think you'll like it better. There's more plot and excitement from seeing it live. I saw it recently at the Signature Theatre in DC, which is a very nice intimate theatre. I think it's playing on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas cruise ship, although I have not see that. I did see Chicago on their sister ship (Allure of the Seas), and it was pretty first rate, so I do have pretty good expectations for the Hairspray show on the Oasis.

The Collector's Edition contains 2 discs. The first is exactly the same as the original soundtrack. The second disc contains extras from the film - outtakes and alternate recordings - fine with that as well - although some of the material is also on the DVD (I did not check all details)
The most disapointing part however is the Karaoke Section. On the cover it promises 5 songs although on the disc are only three songs. On my edition the songs "Welcome to the 60's" and "Come so far" are not on the disc although they are featured on the index on the box.
If you are looking for the Karaoke Version of either of these two songs - be aware and do not purchase the disc.

I didn't know about this awesome soundtrack until I was watching a video on youtube. I already had the 1-Disc version, but I just HAD to have this. And I couldn't be happier with it! The extra CD is filled with a lot of AWESOME tunes. Hairspray is a wonderful movie. The 2-Disc Edition Soundtrack includes 2-sided glossy photos of some of the main characters, stickers, and 2 CD inserts with lyrics and info. Just AMAZING! I recommend this to any Hairspray fan.
