Book Description

Bradt Travel Guide Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola February 1, 1999
Together, Haiti and the Dominican Republic form the island of Hispaniola. Haiti is virgin territory for the low-impact traveler while the Dominican Republic has a well-developed tourist infra-structure with both excellent beaches and accommodations. With easy cross-border travel between the two countries, this guide is targeted at the independent traveler, enabling them to explore off the beaten track and providing all the necessary practical information. Hikes through the lush tropical jungle of the interior, mountain biking, and whale watching can all be experienced. Hispaniola is a good base for island hopping in this part of the Caribbean and information on this feature is given in the guide with a special section for the cruise market. This is the first guidebook to cover Haiti in such depth and is essential for every visitor.

From the Back Cover

Haiti and the Dominican Republic together make up the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Yet while the Dominican Republic is firmly established as a sunseekers' paradise, Haiti is one of the world's least explored countries. The Bradt guide enables visitors to the Dominican Republic to make the most of their trip, exploring with confidence the highest mountains in the West Indies and the oldest city in the New World. For the more adventurous, a journey west across the border to Haiti reveals a beautiful country held back in time, steeped in voodoo and colorful traditions, and with a friendly welcome that cannot fail to attract. (5 3/16 X 8 1/2, 276 pages, maps, color photos, illustrations)

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, really informative - enriched my traveling, September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola (Bradt Travel Guide Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola) (Paperback)
Prior to visiting the Dominican Republic I'd heard alot about the all inclusive holiday camps that operate there but didn't know m uch more. Our three week trip traveling around was therefore preety enlightening. We took a couple of guide books but it was this one we came to rely upon. It deals with everything we needed & went alot further interms of advising on appropriate conduct & giving context to the living standards we'd see & reassuring on safety. I would Thorougly recomnended this guide for the republic - it added to an enjoyable & very different trip by giving insight & saving us alot of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to Haiti, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola (Bradt Travel Guide Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola) (Paperback)
It was with some normal fear that I planned my first foreign trip, one going alone to Haiti for the first time. I found the contents of this book to be invaluable. From listing considerations on what to take, providing suggestions on travel and great directions in the towns and villages listed, I found this book to be very useful. I took it with me and it was a constant reference. I also found the background and history section to be both accurate and interesting. Thanks for helping make my trip a success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable on the road -- and off, March 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola (Bradt Travel Guide Haiti & the Dominican Republic: The Island of Hispaniola) (Paperback)
I was surprised to read the review of this book by David from Miami. Prior to a recent trip to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, I found it to be an excellent source of information as I swatted up on the background to these two very different countries. The author seemed to be genuinely passionate -- and knowlegable -- about the island. The book didn't let me down when I actually hit the road. The practical information proved to be very accurate and comprehensive, and I would have been lost without this book. Unlike many guides, Velton's book is also a jolly good read.
