5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent--you need this.
Bought this on a whim when purchasing a Hakko 936 (an outstanding unit). It sounded like a good idea (less tip stress), and it is! I was never particularly happy with using a wet cloth or sponge. This does a better job of completely cleaning the tip, leaving the working surface shiny and ready to go with just a few plunges into the metal pad. One of those great tools...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cleaner Could Be Improved
"Looked to be metal, but is actually plastic and very light. I put playground sand in the bottom so it wouldn't have the tendancy to move around when using. Considering the material it's made of...highly over priced!, although it does work as advertised. Would expect better from a well known manufacturer."

My solder tip is always caked in dirt and stuff.

A single thrust and twist in the Hakko tip cleaner and it's clean!

Highly recommended!

I work as a tech for an American LED manufacturer. We use these tip cleaners in our lab. I LOVE them, so easy to use and if solder removal is done properly, they'll last forever. I'm about to pick up some for my home projects.

I've recently taken up doing some hobby electronics and as I was looking for a soldering iron I saw this a link for this product. I took a chance based on the reviews and find this to be very good at keeping the tip nice and clean. I do think the price charged for the Hakko Tip Cleaner is a bit high, however I'm not taking away any stars from the product for how vendors price their product.

If you can get a good deal on this product, it certainly handles the task well and is worth getting if you are regularly soldering.

Bought this because I normally just use the silver pad to clean the kitch with.

This looks nicer. What I am disappointed in is that it's plastic. I would at least expect that top part would be metal.. .when you have a hot soldering iron and miss the opening you will melt this.... Not a huge deal but a little thinking to make this more robust would have been nice.. .push too hard and it will move off the table...

As a replacment mess on the inside just go to a kitchen store and get the s/s or copper mesh cleaning pads.

My mess does not look like the picture posted in the add.

Over all not bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Hakko or make your own, January 23, 2012

I don't own one of these. I went to my local supermarket and bought a stainless steel pot scrubber and stuffed it into a small tin can that used to hold spices. It works *very* well, far better than the traditional wet sponge and its always ready to use. The cost was about $4.50.

Based on that, I *assume* the Hakko Tip Cleaner is every bit as good, perhaps better. Whether you go DIY like me or buy the Hakko version, I highly recommend switching to this style of tip cleaner and abandoning wet sponges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Copper Coil Ball Too Small, December 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hakko Tip Cleaner, 599B-02, Non-Corrosive, No Water Needed
Let me start by saying I love this thing. I have never liked the sponges, and this thing gets the tips way cleaner in just a stab or two.

If I had to have one gripe, it's that the ball of copper sits so low (not like it is in the picture), it looked a little sad and ridiculous. A small piece of styrofoam fixed that, but still.. item not as pictured.

This tip cleaner is quite handy! Just poke the tip in and out a few times, and you're good to go. The bottom cap acts as a tray to capture all of the solder flakes for easy disposal. The bottom has rubber feet to keep it from sliding around with use.
