Ben Sollee gained renown for his refreshing take on the cello prevalent in 2008's Learning to Bend. Paired with fellow-Kentuckian Daniel Martin-Moore for 2010's Dear Companion, he championed the fight against "mountain top removal", the strip mining practice decimating the Appalachians, via a heady bluegrass, brash beauty. 2011 found Mr. Sollee creating a progressively bigger sound, with a broader use instruments while steadily incorporating an increasingly-core group of musicians; 2012's Half-Made Man is yet a further progression of this element. Limiting guest appearances (nearly indistinguishable: Abigail Washburn's otherwise generally distinctive supporting vocals on "The Healer"), this album showcases Sollee's capacity to front a group of musicians - now less dependent on his musical proficiency, more than aptly supported by the power of vocalised lyricism. While less cello-scratchin' rhythm spurred, it retains the simple melodies of a man often-times overwhelmed by both the beauty of nature and the harshness of humanity - a harshness newly reflected in a more emotionally-driven vocal rasp.

As with initial impressions of Inclusions, I am experiencing a sense of uneasiness about the new record's sound and/or direction; however, just being several listens in, I can feel the album indubitably ascending to the heights of which all of his other works so inevitably reach, in my own (Kentuckian!) opinion that is. Similarities to the sound of My Morning Jacket's latest release, Circuital, are present (most notably in Slow Down and and Get Off Your Knees) resulting from the collaboration with Kevin Ratterman in Louisville's own Funeral Home Studios.

Another consummate work from a uniquely modern musical hero. A gem sure to continue to evolve and grow in appreciation. Pick it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Half Made Man December 30, 2012

I'm somewhat biased, however, this is an exceptional musical work that illustrates what Ben has learned and how his music is expanding to reach those who may not yet be familiar with the creative enjoyment a singing cellist has to offer. The compositions and artist performances are impressive, yet it all melds into a really tasty listening experience, particularly given the recording quality and excellent mix. The songs range from pensive to powerful and there is something there for nearly everyone to enjoy and remember. I've been listening to Ben for a long time now, but this record really moves me...see him play live if you can.

Ben is a national star taking another big step forward with this release. He has wolrd-class talent as a singer, Cello player, and song-writer. I recommend listeners also pay some close attention to his percussionist Jordon Ellis... he's making some extremely interesting sounds as well. Great new album!
