5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vocal Jazz
Love the music. Love the Harmonies. Their tight delivery and great backup musicians give them a great sound - a lot like Manhatten Transfer's. I even read a review in one of the Washington DC newspapers which said their repetoire was more challenging than Manhatten Transfer's. After 10 more albums, that might be so, but... The group's leader loved the article,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for jazz lovers
I don't care for jazz but my friend gave me this CD and Swing (Manhattan Transfer) cause she said it would be good for me. The music is very sophisticated and voices are nice but really I think it is over my head. Some things I liked.Good for jazz lovers I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vocal Jazz, January 5, 2000

Love the music. Love the Harmonies. Their tight delivery and great backup musicians give them a great sound - a lot like Manhatten Transfer's. I even read a review in one of the Washington DC newspapers which said their repetoire was more challenging than Manhatten Transfer's. After 10 more albums, that might be so, but... The group's leader loved the article, though.

Regardless, it's good music, and I'd highly recommend it for anyone who likes jazz.

And for anyone in the Washington DC area, the group appears regularly around the town. See their website for specific info. Just search for Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet for the site - the review instructions ask us not to post URLs here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vocal Jazz, July 31, 2001
This review is from: Half-Past Swing (Audio CD)
This sounds like Manhattan Transfer on those occasions when they decide to do jazz. Heard them on NPR. I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Superb, August 14, 2000

I feel a similar sensation with this CD as I felt the first time I heard Oscar Peterson play years ago: You cannot believe your ears. The harmonies are so tight and fast, and the vocals are so distinct: I didn't know four individual voices could do such things.

I've known and been a fan of Lisanne Lyons for 6 years and she is a very talented performer. The cd is incredible and I highly recommend it. FYI - Lisanne has a new solo cd out entitled "Right As the Rain" that you should also consider buying. Watch our Manhatten Transfer - this group is real and on it's way up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great four part lush blend and harmonies!, October 30, 1999
This review is from: Half-Past Swing (Audio CD)
I had the opportunity to work with Lisanne Lyons, the group's soprano, this past weekend. Her cd is a testament to her wonderful singing and ability to share her vocal jazz talent with youngsters. It is great to hear a new vocal jazz group out there and one with a great feel and blend. If you are into vocal jazz, this cd is a must to your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite Grammy caliber but very listenable, September 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Half-Past Swing (Audio CD)
This CD features Manhattan Transfer-like vocals and arrangements. The opening tune, "Bouncin With Bud," has a top-knotch big band backing up the vocals and sets a great mood from the get go.

The originals are creative and varied (not just mushy ballads or trite swing tunes) and there's even a bit of French ("Jouet").

Stayed up all night trying to find those "explicit lyrics" but couldn't find them. Must be in "Jouet" and they must be the French lyrics.

An independent release, there are a few places here and there that aren't completely polished but nothing that got in the way of a very listenable CD. In fact it's refreshing sometimes to hear a bit of "rawness." Makes it sound more real. Can't wait to hear the next UVJQ release!

I have listen to the CD from a good friend. The CD gives you a very good favor of upbeat Jazz as well as the "Old School" variety of Jazz which is something rare these days. Evening if you like to listen to Jazz on occasions, I think you should try this CD.

Sweeeeet! This disk isn't phony over-produced blah-blah. It sounds like a live recording - without the noise. They swing their a**es off. I want more!
