5.0 out of 5 stars Best album of the year so far., September 19, 2012

It's rare that someone can make something so minimal so powerful. With guitars hardly ever louder than a whisper, the occasional sparse drum and upright bass, and a powerful voice backed by evocative lyrics, this album hits all the right spots and avoids all of the pitfalls that might be associated with the tired idea of folk albums. Though I hesitate to call this folk in any way, because it's something that feels older and oh-my-god so much better. Olsen simply kills it with this album.

You may know her from BPB and the Cairo Gang, Angel's voice is striking. Even more so on this solo album. This album blends genres and yet remains cohesive and refreshing. Granted, this is not uplifting music per se, but it is very fresh in a retro sort of way. This music would not be out of place in a David Lynch film, but that description does not do this music justice. Spanish guitars in one song, a retro 50's sound to another, back country lullaby.... And yet the voice... Enchanting.

You should take a chance and listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angel Olsen's best album yet., September 22, 2012

Angel Olsen sings pretty songs with an unconventional vocal delivery. Emmet Kelly plays the bass guitar very tunefully, occasionally recalling some early rock n' roll melodies, which is also a highlight. I can't get enough of this album. Can't wait for the new Cairo Gang album later this month. Also check out Angel's earlier work, and her and Emmet's recent work with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

Angel Olsen's vocals are doleful, soaring, and beautiful. If you enjoy anything from Roy Orbison to Johnny Cash to The Mountain Goats, give this a listen.

Edgy, haunting lyrics! Lovely haunting voice. Someone this young should not have experienced such Weltschmerz!
Take a chance!! You'll like it!
