Jane Gray Cannon Swisshelm, a native of Pittsburgh, became an ardent feminist and abolitionist, motivated by a strong religious faith. She was the first woman journalist to sit in the press gallery of the U.S. Senate, and worked as a nurse in military hospitals of the Civil War. Her story is interesting and well-told.
This edition of it, however, is simply abominable, with multiple misspellings and typographical mistakes on nearly every page. If the publisher was unable to find a competent type-setter or proof-reader, let them photographically reproduce the original 1880 edition. This kind of "edition" is a pimple on the face of American history, and completely unworthy of a brave and talented woman such as Swisshelm.
