4.0 out of 5 stars Head North, December 30, 2004
This review is from: Halfway Man (Hardcover)
This is an intriguing and heartfelt novel about the differing relationships that Native Americans and Whites have with nature, as well as with the past and with fellow humans. The story revolves around an Ontario Indian, Travis, whose ancient fishing village on Lake Superior has been set for demolition to make way for a resort development. Travis takes the emotionally damaged CEO of the offending corporation on a trip to the wilds of the north country, hoping to make the man learn about the different ways that Indians view economic development and ties to the land. The story moves pretty slowly, and things get interesting for a while when Travis' community has trouble deciding what to do about the development plans, but this is mostly a back-to-nature kind of story. And though the writing style is overly sentimental, with a distracting reliance on flashbacks, and the plot and characters don't develop too believably, this is still a good read and is likely to affect your views on the relations between man and nature. 5.0 out of 5 stars This book has changed my outlook on life., May 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Man (Hardcover)
Halfway Man has changed my perspective of nature and shown me that there is hope for the world. It made me realize the good and evil that are prevalent in all of us, and how to bring out the good more often than the evil. If I have learned nothing else throughout my highschool career, I have been taught patience, acceptance and spirituality by Wayland Drew. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the Earth Mr. Drew.

4.0 out of 5 stars A true attention grabber, January 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Man (Hardcover)
I personally enjoyed Halfway Man immensly. The style Drew used by telling the story in circles with no specific order was intriguing. The author is descriptive to a point that readers truely feel like they know the chacters and breath the same northern air. Overall I'm glad I got the chance to read this novel in English class and would recommend it to others. Drew is an amazing author and I am proud to say he is Canadian.

I am in grade eleven and have just read Halfway Man for english. I found it a very insightful book, and I learned a lot about life in general by reading it. I could relate in many ways to it. I think it has a variety of important themes that we should pay more attention to. This book has a powerful message, and I would strongly reccomend it to everyone. Jennifer Salmon

4.0 out of 5 stars Has very important messages to offer., January 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Man (Paperback)
I think the book Halfway Man should be considered among some Canadian Classics. It is very close to our lives and should be regarded. Through reading books, such as Halfway Man, we can learn much about the culture and ideals of the people around us and the people inside us. It can offer some people an insight into themselves if they were so inclined to look. I believe it is a great book and should be taught in more Canadian High Schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awsome read..could not put the book down, January 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Man (Hardcover)
I read this book for my grade eleven english class. At fist I was apprehensive about the book, but once into it I really enjoyed it. Drew's unique style of writting kept the pages turing, and me interested. With him being a Canadian author I could relate to his ideas and concepts. He also ties in wonderful lessons about society and our selves that I might have never have gained without reading this book. Halfway Man has something for eveyones and I highly recomend it.
