Rangers vs Goblins, Wizards vs Witches, what more do you need?, February 22, 2011
This review is from: The Hall of the Wood (Kindle Edition)
The Hall of the Wood is an adventure fantasy book following the life of Jed. Jed is an ex-ranger who left the order when he settled down with his wife. Tragedy strikes when his wife and child perish at childbirth and he blames himself for the event. He decides to return to his roots at Ranger Hall to speak to some old friends and get his life back on track. He sets off with his late wife's dog Ash and the journey begins. Along the way he meets Murik a wizard with a great deal of power and a secret mission. Since both of them have the same mission they join forces and head to Homewood. Further along the way they meet Holly a bard and Kayra an apprentice knight. From these two they learn that there has been a call for help issued from the town and something is very wrong with the wood. The adventure follows the path of the group getting to know each other and they are all faced with their inner demons to overcome as well. Will they be able reverse the mysterious decay of the forest and figure out why the goblins are beginning to invade? The story is well written and has some interesting characters and plot twists along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre and for [...] why not give it a try. I am intrigued enough by the author that I will be purchasing his other book in the near future to see what else he has to offer.

Entertaining read, December 22, 2011
This review is from: The Hall of the Wood (Kindle Edition)
Fairly predictable quest plotline with the usual characters but enough character development to keep me (as a character driven reader)entertained. The first quarter of the book was probably the most interesting, with more action, the latter third could have been shortened. The fight sequences were generally good, I ended up skimming the rather extended descriptions of the 'mental travail' of the main characters during their final confrontation with the witch. In those descriptions, I think less would have worked better. Overall, an entertaining read without any major flaws but unfortunately no real "wow' factors either that would encourage me to keep the book to re-read.

An enjoyable fantasy read, February 9, 2012
This review is from: The Hall of the Wood (Kindle Edition)
A classic fantasy adventure story. Strangers brought together on a quest for answers and ultimately to save the very things that each hold dear. I really liked the character depth that Marlowe brought to his protaganists. The detail of the surroundings and of the characters themselves, especially Jerrick, made it easy to dive into the world and connect. My only hesitance in giving this 5 stars was due to some editing issues within the Kindle format in which I read it as well as a few overlooked proofreading errors. In the end, these strangers become companions and friends as they struggle to defeat their foes, and the story wraps up nicely with lots action and heart.
