Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4-Considerably more challenging than QEB's "Puzzle Adventures" set, these "Where's Waldo"-style volumes cram hundreds of similar-looking cartoon figures and objects into busy spreads. Each tableau comes with a visual list of items to spot: 6 in the first few scenes and 9 and then 12 in subsequent pages. Christmas not only includes spreads for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's, but also settings that range from Santa's teeming workshop to celebrating crowds in tropical locales. Each volume ends with 10 bonus items to find.α(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Format: Hardcover
I bought this for my 5 year old boys because they love hidden object books. There's so much to say about this book, where do I begin? First, the length is just right. It takes awhile to go through the book, so 32 pages actually lasts a lot longer than you might think. Second, the illustrations are wonderfully fun, bright and creative! It's just fun to flip through the book and look at the pictures. It's also fun to look for all of the little details that are hidden within and that doesn't even include the items you're actually searching for.

The book really stands out for 2 reasons:

1) The hidden objects all belong in the picture. There's a style of hidden object books where you need to find things that don't belong anywhere in there in the first place, so you need to look in someone's hair to find a bottle of ink or a fish where someone's shoe should be. Those are fun but can get a little annoying after awhile. Or maybe that's just me. But what I enjoyed about Halloween Hide and Seek was that everything you were looking for belonged in the picture so it didn't feel as if the illustrator was trying to trick you but more challenge you to find the objects amongst all of the detail. And believe me, it is a challenge! It took my boys and I a good 5 - 10 minutes to do each page. It would've taken them longer if I didn't help out. So nothing is too obvious or over sized. Even for older kids or adults, this is still a fun and challenging book.

2) The list of objects that need to be found are written out but they also have little gray pictures of them, too. This may not seem like a big deal but actually, it is. A lot of hidden object books only spell the words out which makes it a lot harder for little kids to play by themselves.
