Editorial Reviews

Hallowe'en Hysteria and Other All Hallows Frolics is a collection of Halloween songs like no other!

Alan Sanborn and the All Hallows Players have been creating and performing original Halloween musical productions in West Los Angeles since 1990. This entertaining collection, featuring more than one hour of songs, highlights the music from eight of their productions -seven single songs, such as Hallowe'en Hysteria, The Ghosts Come Out on Hallowe'en, and The Ballad of Jack of the Lantern, and one mini-musical, A Hallowe'en Carol, Also included are two bonus tracks - the original radio version of Hallowe'en Hysteria as heard on the Dr. Demento radio show and the Molten Voltage classic, We're Gonna Wake the Dead.

Fun for both kids and Halloween fans of all ages, this album will show you the holiday as you've never looked at before - through the sometimes zany, sometimes nostalgic, but always engrossing mind of creator Alan Sanborn. It's the perfect gift for all the Halloween fans in your life!

Alan Sanborn and crew have produced an entertaining collection of songs and ballads celebrating Halloween. Appropriate for family listening, the songs and stories-in-song are great for those who feel a bit too mature for the "Great Pumpkin" but somewhat intimidated by "Tales from the Crypt". Catchy tunes and lyrics you can actually hear and understand will have you singing along in no time. The high quality of the selections make it hard to believe this is the soundtrack of what has basically been a backyard theatrical production. Definitely recommended for fans of Halloween.

Those beginning lyrics of "Hallowe'en Hysteria" have ushered in autumn for my daughter and me for years. Because the songs are soundtracks from the artists' Hallowe'en performances, each has its own story to tell. All are original, catchy sing-alongs that spark the imagination and inspire our own spirit of holiday. My particular favorites are both versions of "Hallowe'en Hysteria," "The Witch's Daughter," "Under the Pumpkin Moon," and "The Ghosts Come Out on Hallowe'en." "The Legend of Jack of the Lantern" is my daughter's favorite...and it's a bit of a little History lesson too! Of all the Hallowe'en music available today, this is certainly among the best.

If you are tired of hearing the same old songs at Halloween, this wonderful album is for you. It's full of original and funny songs and story-songs, and is family friendly. Written by a man who truly loves the spirit of Halloween, these songs will become big favorites. Our kids listen to it over and over, even when it's not Halloween. It has also sparked their imagination into thinking about Halloween in different ways and from different perspectives.

A friend told me about this cd, telling me that I'd be surprised by the quality of the songs, she was right! This Alan Sanborn has written what can best be described as "story songs" with very hearable lyrics and catchy melodies that in its essence celebrates not just a single day of the year, but the child in all of us who want to escape the pressures of our life and dwell, for but a brief moment, in a fantasy world of jack o'lanterns, spirits, and the Great Pumpkin. For me, the highlight was the song about the ultimate garage band, "We're Going to Wake the Dead". You won't believe it until you hear it!

After owning this CD for several years, I wonder how we could ever celebrate the lore, the fun, and our most favorite Halloween traditions without these tunes! From quiet evenings with the family gathered 'round the fireplace listening to "Halloween Hysteria," "A Hallowe'en Carol," and "The Ballad of Jack of the Lantern" to raising the roof with an entire houseful of friends belting out the lyrics to "We're Gonna Wake the Dead," this timeless collection delivers a comforting dose of nostalgia with a refreshing tweak of mischief. Truly a highlight of our season!
