This is an adorable book. My son already has 4 of the Funny Faces books, so I thought it'd be fun to get a Halloween one. Problem is, the sound and lights on the last page never worked. So I sent it back and exchanged it for another one. Same problem with the replacement book--no lights and sound. I finally gave up and got a refund instead of risking a third try and having the same problem.

We bought this for our now 3-year-old when he wasn't quite 1. He has loved it ever since and now our new baby, at 10 months, is crazy about it, too. The sound effects on the last page work most of the time, still, and have outlasted other books with sound effects we've had. Even without the sound, the book would be great. It's a fun one to act out for the kids and our 3 year old is starting to sight read now and has a good time with it on that level, too.

I received this book, but the sound effects did not work, returned it and received another from Amazon and the sound effects are sporadic, at best. A disappointed grandchild, when it works one time in every 10 openings.

Lights and Sound only work under bright lights...,
This review is from: Halloween Jack: With Lights and Sound (Board book)
The book is great as a book in itself... however the lights and sound feature only work when used under bright lights... I'm not sure who reads their children bedtime stories under bright lights but it was pretty disappointing to NOT be able to surprise our 4 year old with the action at the end of the book when it was finished... I don't know why it takes bright lights to activate but that's really the only way I can get it to work...Very disappointing. Ruined a lot of planning on giving our little one a little Halloween scare... VERY anti-climatic. The sudden sound and lights at the end was the whole reason we bought the book.

We bought both the Funny Faces Halloween Jack and Santa Claus books for our 13 month old twin girls. They absolutley LOVED them, at first when the sound effects on the last page worked. They only seem to work some of the time. Our girls loved them so much, that they wanted to play with the books they would replicate the sounds the books made, but when they opened the books the only sound we heard was our girls crying because the books were not working. These books are totally unreliable and a total dissapointment.

ISBN 0312500076 - Manufactured in China. Board book binding, 10 pages. No author or illustrator named on book, "made by" Jo Rigg, Simon Mugford and Sarah McCrum. Published by Priddy Books in 2007. Marked Not for Children under 3 Years, Choking Hazard, Small Parts. Has replaceable batteries, foil inserts, moving eyes, touch and feel cover, makes noise and has lights. In short rhymes, Halloween Jack and four other characters are introduced. There's a LOT going on with this book. The front cover has a touchable pumpkin and die-cut holes for the jack-o-lantern's face. The eyes are die-cut through every page, all the way to the back, showing moving eyes. The nose and mouth have foil inserts on the first page. The last page has a "surprise" - a bat which has flashing red lights for eyes and the page produces a traditional Dracula ah-ha-ha sound. The trouble with this last bit of novelty is that it's really novel. Usually, opening the page cues the lights and/or sounds. In this case, it's LIGHT that sets it off. Bright light. Which, in case it hasn't yet occurred to you, kind of ruins any Halloween mood setting you may have engaged in before reading. No eerie candlelight for this book! Last, despite being a board book, a binding that it usually aimed at very young kids, there's the choking hazard. I LIKE this book. I like it a lot. It's busy and fun. It includes a very small scare, for those kids who are just edging toward being able to handle the fun and exciting frights of Halloween. Even for those not frightened in the least by it, the lights and sound are funny, and that's still a plus! The illustrations are brilliantly, boldly, colored. The images are simple enough to almost resemble the drawings of kids, with little in the way of details, but the vibrant colors more than make up for that. Awesome book, with the only flaw being the need for a fairly bright room to set off the battery-operated surprise. - AnnaLovesBooks

I found this book in a book store and fell in love with (I am 28 years old). The book appeals to both kids and adults. I plan to use it as a coffee table book around Halloween.
