5.0 out of 5 stars Read this one entirely in one sitting, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Halloween: The Special Limited Edition (Volume 4) (Paperback)
I want to mention I never owned the first version of the novel, the one that he did in mass market because I was too young at the time to know where to find it.

My introduction to Nicholas Grabowsky was by Nicholas Grabowsky himself when he published my short story, INSECT, on his website. So from there I managed to get a copy of this book and the Everborn. Because of my busy scedule too as an author, the reading for my own pleasure lagged because I was reading submissions for my publications.

Now as of recently I went into the hospital for a sprained neck, and I grabbed this book from my collection to read on the bus down to Cook County Hospital in Oak Forrest. I read this book all the way down to the hospital and while in the waiting room I finished it. The notes on how Nick got the access to the script made this even more interesting, and my room mate owns Halloween: 25th Anniversary and he was featured in the documentary.

As an author, it was because of Nicholas Grabowsky I managed to get my first two books published and apologize to Nick for taking so long with this review. If you've seen the movie, you know the plot but he adds a few more nasty and macabre surprises that are distinctly him. The scene descibing some of the patients in Smith's Grove was one that got to me -- especially the scene where he descibes a kid in there for eating his family for Christmas dinner and gives the leftovers to his friends at school.

That is a part that really got to me, and when the nurses called me to be checked in -- I actually jumped because the irony where I was when I was reading the book. Everything in the book is from the screenplay by Alan B. McElroy, and the scenes cut from the finished movie found their way into the novel, and this is something I have to salute Nick for doing. Five starts isn't enough to rate this book, for the scene alone about the cannibal kid -- I have to give Nick close to 9 stars here.

These days Nick is crossing over to doing film from doing novels but he still does novels. Keep them coming man, and thank you for opening the door for me two years ago.

Grabowsky is back and he is here to stay, even if he isn't writing as Nicholas Randers anymore. The 2000s he's back and writing under his real name. I had the honor of hearing from Grabowsky on the phone the day I found out I was going to be in Reality Check too, and this was also on my birthday so for that reason I have to try my damnest to give a review this book deserves.

This book is released via Amazon Books now (since they got the merger with Booksurge.) I wish this book is available as a hardcover print because I want to add that version to my collection too. The covers of the copy I own is just about worn out.

All in all, Grabowsky is a damned good story teller -- to be celebrated by both Wes Craven and Stephen King is an achivement in itself. I wish he got a copy of this book or some of his to Arkham House because he needs that kind of support too, so if you're reading this man -- give it a shot with them because I think he is more than worthy of H.P. Lovecraft.

Him bringing Dr. Sam Loomis to print in this novel I have to give him extra Kudos. I've seen writers on a place that publishes stories that are not authorized try to do it but no one can touch Grabowsky for doing a dead on vision to what both John (Carpenter) and Debra (Hill, R.I.P.) had for Myers when they first wrote the screen play and filmed it in 1978.

I first seen Halloween on network TV when I was sixteen, and between Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Dr. Giggles -- my path was set in the genre to write the stories too that scared people out of the wits. Without Carpenter or Victor Miller, I might not of imagined the stories I wrote too in the genre. Grabowsky reminded me of that too when he did this book.

Books this size aren't always a fast read but this one was. I was shocked how fast I was done reading this one -- I was reading it at four chapters an hour. He made Halloween his with this one.
