Book Description

BRONZE MEDAL WINNER in Military Writers Society of America 2013 Annual Competition! Military Writers Society of America Book of the Month!

Now with a Glossary of Terms!

It's August, 1969. Hamilton “Hamfist” Hancock has been shot down over Laos, and must use all his skill, and luck, to avoid capture and certain, violent death. To facilitate his rescue, he must become a ground FAC and direct airstrikes against North Vietnamese targets on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. And, to survive, he must engage in hand-to-hand combat.

But Hamfist may face his greatest battle after his rescue. Back in Vietnam, while recuperating at the hospital at Cam Ranh Bay, he experiences a sapper attack. And, following his return to the air, Hamfist is tormented by a flying error, an error which may have cost a comrade his life.

Only time will tell if Hamfist can regain his self-respect and passion. On his final flight, Hamfist faces a brutal enemy in a life-or-death duel that will determine if he will be shot down once again or return home to his soul-mate. The rescue, the airborne mistake and the final battle force Hamfist to reevaluate his priorities in his career, in his flying, and in his life.

Hamfist Down! picks up where Hamfist Over the Trail left off, with Hamilton “Hamfist” Hancock trying to survival and escape after being shot down over Laos. We follow Hamfist as he makes it to safety, only to experience new dangers as he takes to the sky again as a Forward Air Controller. On every mission, he worries about his true love waiting for him in Japan and whether or not he’ll ever see her again.

G.E. Nolly's writing kept me turning pages to see what would happen next. The author’s experience as a pilot shines through every page. The language is authentic, which is to say occasionally there are expletives. If you like a good action-packed adventure tale, this one is for you.

- Military Writers Society of America

The author expertly portrays the harsh realities of this War. His experiences as an Air Force pilot, who flew 315 combat missions during two successive tours in Vietnam, provide exceptional background information. Descriptions of the geographical areas, combat and recovery scenes, military terminology, and dialogue all reflect an in-depth knowledge of the Vietnam Era. The dates shown at the beginning of each chapter keep the reader engaged in the timeframe of events. This novel is part of a Hamfist novel trilogy which also includes: Hamfist Over the Trail and Hamfist Over Hanoi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable and fast moving September 29, 2012
By W Earle
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This sequel to 'Hamfist Over the Trail" is a fast paced story of the life of a 'Covey' Forward Air Controller in Vietnam who gets shot down over the Ho Chi Min Trail and the ensuing escape from potential captors, complex rescue effort and sometimes funny and other times suspenseful journey back to flying and life as an Air Force Pilot. The recollections, vignettes and descriptions of locations, people and the interactions of fellow pilots and others puts the reader vividly in touch with the feelings and experiences of so many who served during that period. For those who flew and know Vietnam, this will definitely bring back memories of those places and people we knew and the range of emotions we felt as one fits one's own comrades into the characters Nolly crafts and describes so well.

I am to young to have gone to Vietnam. I saw a report on the news one night and asked my Mom what that was (Thought it was a war movie) and from that day on
I was intrigued by it all. This Work left me with a great feeling (I feel pain for their losses after reading some) A True Hero, even if he doesn't think so,He is to me. You will not be disappointed with this great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick moving read-Part 2 of the Triolgy January 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read Part one previously and just finished this entry of Part two of the Trilogy of Hamfist. I really enjoyed the first book and could hardly put it down. This one was equally enjoyable and I found myself finishing it in one afternoon-evening of reading. It is a novel (Fiction) so I did not pick up to read like a memoir or a documentary (non-Fiction), so while some of the action of our hero Hamfist might be a bit out there, I enjoyed the story, like the characters, appreciated the jargon that helped me visualize what a FAC would be doing in that particular situation. I read for escapement entertainment (and with battling a cold I was glad I had this book as a distraction to take my mind off of that crummy feeling) and was not disappointed. I liked Hamfists sense of humor and the characters sense of duty and values. Have purchase Part 3 and will be starting that this weekend. Can't wait to see the final chapters in this story set.

I choose 5 stars because of the adventure of this book. I feel that it was a great book and that the parts of flying had the correct language of the 1968 Ariforce

4.0 out of 5 stars Two "down", one to go October 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This second book in the trilogy/series is every bit as good as the first although it does seem to contain more errors and omissions than number one. The continuation of the story is seamless and you again find yourself directly in the middle of the action due to the author's excellent writing. These books are extremely realistic and portray the times perfectly. I am about to open the final book and find out how things turn out. By the way, the intertwined love story is another really enjoyable aspect of these stories. Four and one half stars for this one.

...I finally decided to take a chance, I bought the entire series, and I LOVE IT..! There is only the tiniest of clues that these books are fiction and it's really easy to look the other way. BoyOboy, this guy has been there and must've done that, ALL of it. And if he wasn't and didn't, he sure fooled me. Thank You for writing these books, Mr. Nolly. I really wish you all the best of luck in the future, a future which (I hope) includes writing more books! o(*_*)o

5.0 out of 5 stars What would you do? August 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Escape and Evasion is something the military stresses for everyone. An inside look at the thoughts and fears of being alone on the ground. Everyone thinks about what they would do. The actual experience makes you re think your decisions. What happens when you experience the terror of being captured. How the situation changes so rapidly and how the person reacts to those changes.
