Product Description

Amazon.com Review

This basic member of the Hamilton Beach Cool Mist family dispenses with frills such as automatic humidity control but retains a sleek, convenient oval design. Because the controls are on one end of the oval rather than the side, the unit can be operated easily even if placed in a narrow space. (It's 10 inches wide and about 17 inches deep.) The single control knob operates a two-speed fan, which means your only options are Quiet Mist and High settings; the latter is pretty noisy, but the former will probably do the trick in most circumstances. The curvy, translucent gray rear tank lifts off easily for refilling, as does the front fan unit for changing or rinsing the drop-in filter. The water tank is dishwasher-safe. --Richard Farr

4.0 out of 5 stars Very quiet, very subtle humidity, March 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 05518 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier (Kitchen)
This line of humidifiers is unlike others I've seen. They do not emit mist, nor a high level of humidity. They operate by simply allowing the water to evaporate, then blowing it into the air. As a result, the only noise it makes is from a small (but powerfull) fan. I bought it to counter act my dry heater in my New York apartment. I would wake up dry and coughing. When I saw no mist coming from the unit I wondered if it was working at all- but after the first night of use, it proved itself as an indespensible appliance. The humidifier does not over humidify, it is very quiet, and there are no metal / corrosive elements. Filling it is really easy - and cleaning is even easier, unlike other more traditional (and stronger humidity) humidifiers. If you just need to normalize your humidity so the winter months aren't so dry- this is for you. If you want your windows to sweat, and grow banana trees in your bedroom, you won't get enough humidity. Overall, I love the conveniece, humidity level, and the quietness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless and costly machine, April 15, 2003
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 05518 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier (Kitchen)
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

The filters gets moldy in a week or less. This caused you to have to replace them often, which ends up being more than the cost of the machine itself after only 6 replacement filters. I do not find that the humidity in the room is any better than if I did not use this unit at all. I even tried running the unit on high, which is very loud, and it does no better at creating comfort.

I now use a Walgreen's vaporizer and it has worked wonders! No more dry air, nose or throat in the morning.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Ergonoimics, but Poor Design and Poor Quality Control, March 27, 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 05518 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier (Kitchen)

I had to return this product because of four reasons:

a) The motor bearing had a problem, causing the fan to make a "ticking" sound whenever it spun;

b) The fan was eccentrically mounted on its shaft which made the fan spin off-balance, causing additional noise;

c) The water tank nozzle required a very strong person and unusually high amount of force to open it and close it. This tank has a regressive "quarter-turn" design rather than the traditional screw-on cap.

d) Turning the fan off tripped my GFI outlet, revealing poor fan motor circuit design.

On the lighter side, this unit is an excellent example of great ergonomic design. It has a water containment tray (so you dont need to place one underneath), removable/dishwasher safe water tray, and the fan unit and power cord are modular and completely/easily removable.
