Well made, seems like it will last.
Dwight M. Collins
We like our waffles dark and crispy, but it has setting for lighter and softer waffles as well, so everyone gets their waffles the way they like them.
K. Kishel
The waffles came out perfect and it was easy to clean too.

This Hamilton Beach (model #26009) Waffle Maker (Proctor Silex is the same company) is really great! It makes evenly cooked, light and fluffy, crisp one-inch waffles (3.5 inches x 4.5 inches in size). The non-stick coating works perfectly and the unit's small size guarantees even heating will not be a problem. (The 4x5 in the title of this review refers to the number of depressions in the waffle. Traditionally, 3x5 is a Brussels Waffle, 4x6 is a Liege Waffle. Both are Belgian. Most waffle makers in the U.S. are either round or square, not rectangular. Ergo, they cannot produce Belgian Waffles. But this Hamilton Beach model is as close as I could get. Unless I spend $800 on a 50lb. cast iron unit from a restaurant supply company. Not likely.)

Of course, creating a great waffle depends on more than just the waffle maker. For instance, I always brush on a light coating of refined almond oil (smoke point = 495 degrees F.) before the first batter-pour**. If I smell burning oil smoke before the ready-light goes on, I reduce the temperature. With this unit, I set the min/max knob to max. When the pre-heat light went on (after 4 minutes), the oil was just starting to smoke. I poured the batter into the center of the left 4x5 space and then the center of the right space, finishing off any corners the batter had not yet reached. Once the batter touches the grid, the temperature drops and the smoke, if any, stops immediately. Closing and locking the cover presented no problem. Steam started shooting out right away. Steam is 212 degrees F. so smoke has no chance at this point. As this unit has no built-in timer, but asks you to watch for diminishing steam levels, I just set my own timer to 7 minutes (I use whole grain flours and they always take a little longer to cook).

I bought this model because of generally good reviews here and elsewhere. It does what it's supposed to: makes waffles crispy on the outside and soft on the inside using a store-bought Belgian waffle mix. I found the medium to less-than-medium setting works best for me at about 4 1/2-5 minutes cook time. Haven't tried a made-from-scratch waffle batter yet. Parts breaking off and shooting across the kitchen? I have no idea what that's about and hasn't happened to me. I inadvertently dropped the top closed on the bottom and still no damage. Caution however: the top gets HOT and because of the small locking/lifting handle, it is easy to touch the hot metal top; I know this from personal experience. The handle could have been made larger. Aside from this small issue, I recommend this model for good looking and tasting waffles quickly and cleanly.

Tried made-from-scratch "True Belgian Waffles" recipe from food.com. Waffles take about 1 minute longer to finish. The edges of each waffle do not brown as well as the center portion. However, the edges are cooked through. Directions that come with the product state that waffles are done when steam stops rising from the unit and I found this to be true. Per the directions, I did not use any shortening after first-time use. The waffles stuck to the upper plate upon opening the unit but still came away cleanly. May use very light shortening on future attempts. I still recommend this unit.

Received this as a Xmas gift. Unit is small and compact- fits anywhere.
I've used it once to make 12 waffles (which took some time, no biggie. I cleaned the kitchen as I eyeballed the waffles being cooked), and I've used it another 3 times to make 6 waffles each time. I made whole wheat, flaxseed cinnamon waffles and they turned out great. They didn't stick and came out nice and easy when it came time to popping them out (I used a plastic fork to not scratch the unit). The recipe I use says to spray a little bit of EVOO spray on the grid so that waffles don't stick. I simply added a little EVOO in the mix and that has worked like a charm every time.
**Cook the waffles thoroughly bc if you don't and try to open the unit the waffles will split in half. I cooked my whole wheat waffles for 7mins on Med. 2 are enough to fill my boyfriend to the rim when I add fruit on top.
** Yes, steam does rise out of the front of the unit when cooking do not be alarmed.
** Use a plastic fork or toothpick to lift up waffles otherwise you'll scratch the unit.
** Spray Pam or EVOO on unit or add it to your recipe to avoid waffles from sticking.
** Don't slam machine lid closed bc yes you will make a mess or break the unit.
** There's NO cleanup of any sort when I pour just enough batter to cover the black grids. (don't over pour bc it will make a mess)
** Note: I put a piece of wax paper underneath unit just in case of any batter spillage.

Don't be scared by the other reviews. Honestly, I'm not sure how the other 2 ppl above are using the machine if the black parts are breaking off, and/or shooting across the room (maybe try a $200 machine made of iron) I am no more gentler on this machine than another. The machine is fabulous. I'm very content with this $15.77 Hamilton Beach waffle maker. (that price is at Walmart) I'll be buying another unit for my sister so she can also have fabulous whole wheat healthy waffles.

The waffle maker was delivered as promise. I was excited about using the waffle maker since I have not owned one for a couple of years or more. It makes just enough waffles for one to two person household. Waffles are soft and fluffy. Temperature gauge is calibrated just right for the browning of your waffle. I highly recommend Hamilton beach waffle maker for your home. Enjoy!
