5.0 out of 5 stars The best toaster oven I've seen

I've used several different toaster ovens in my lifetime, but none has been so satisfying as this one by Hamilton Beach. Chief among its features is an uncanny ability to do what you would think all toaster ovens should be able to do: make toast. I'm not sure how, exactly, but this oven is better than a single-purpose toaster for achieving a precise golden color. More than that, though, it's a true oven replacement for most small baking needs. You can easily make most TV dinners and the like using just this single device. Likewise, you can use its broiler to make original meals. I've broiled fish to perfection in it, and had less to clean up than if I'd used a full-sized oven. And because it comes encased in a special "cool-touch" surface, it's very safe to use under wooden cabinets. If you're in the market for a toaster oven, consider this as a potential addition to your kitchen's countertop.

The oven door never closes completely, frozen dinners that should take 30 minutes take closer to an hour and it took 25 minutes to reheat a slice of pizza. Expect to watch the complete saga of "Gone With the Wind" while waiting for your food to heat up! One word...Ridiculous!

This was a total disappointment and frankly a huge waste of money.

Warning: The surgeon general says stay far away from this loser! But wanting to end on a positive note, it does make a cute cricket sound at the end of the toast cycle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Try another product, September 18, 2000

I received this product a week ago. I bought it because of an excellent review I read here. But my experience is quite different. The heat is so uneven it can't get the job done. The toast test is a joke. Forget about cooking a frozen item properly. Maybe it's because the door is so crooked the heat is escaping. Or maybe it's because of some other defect. In any case, it's the most poorly made appliance of any kind I've seen in many years. Buy another toaster oven... even the cheapest one you can find will probably do better than this dud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Toaster OR Oven !, June 21, 2000
By A Customer

Fantasitic - I have had this toaster for 3 weeks now and not had any problems. I used to have just a standard bread toaster, but when I broke I went searching for something that could be used to heat pizza slices and other quick things from the night before. This oven does just that - for a great price. My only problem with it is its small interior size - just a little bigger would be nice.

Received the oven today, and disappointed with the "fit and finish." Parts not fitting together correctly, and as far as the "cool exterior" while cooking, forget it. Seems to toast OK.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This!, October 20, 2001

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 31430 IntelliToast Toaster Oven/Broiler (Kitchen)
What a piece of junk! Terribly uneven toast. The same slice of bread will be burnt on one side and completely untoasted on the other. And that's when it toasts at all. Too often it refuses to move from oven mode, particularly if the unit hasn't cooled after the first attempted toast. Please, do yourself a favor and find another unit. It would HAVE to be better than this!

I am using this toaster/oven for several months now and find that for its price it does a very fine job. Of course it is not the Mercedes of this product category but in my opinion one has to consider the Quality/Price ratio.

I am especially happy that my rolls and all the toasts come out exactly the way I want it and that in a consistent manner for months now.

Bought it because of a great review read here - can't even toast both sides of a piece of toast. Wish I had saved the box so I could return it. Total waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Features are one thing, but execution is another!, January 24, 2002

It appears that people either love it or they hate it. I wanted specific features so my elementary-aged kids could make their own toast. It looked like this one had them. BUT I am taking mine back today. Reasons: 1--The baking rack came broken. 2--The toast function lever is flimsy and will likely break shortly under normal kid use. (I now know the display one in the store was already broken.) 3--Did not heat evenly. I tried mini-pizzas and biscuits--flunked both, it was substantially inferior to regular oven. 4--"Cool Touch exterior" wasn't. Somewhere in the fine print maybe they say it's cool compared with other non-insulated toaster ovens...this may be true. But for my kids' use, it wasn't great. 5--End-of-toast cycle signal (I wanted this feature) was too quiet to be heard readily at the other end of the kitchen. 6--User documentation was skimpy. 7--English muffin toasting was terrible. They tell you to turn the muffin over on the rack so it will be toasted by the lower heating element. This meant you could not see it brown. It toasted unevenly and required excruciatingly close attention to keep it from burning. I didn't have the heart to try bagels. Not what I had in mind when I bought it!

One review said it's the best for the price. It does have a lot of features for the money. But it comes down to value, which comes down to execution. Toast and heating are excellent for some people, and terrible/uneven for others. Do you want to chance it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't have any problems, August 21, 2001
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 31430 IntelliToast Toaster Oven/Broiler (Kitchen)
I don't know whether I am the lucky one or some of the other reviewers the unlucky ones, but my toaster works just great. I've been using it on Bagels, and it works just fine, get's 'em as brown as I want, and the same goes for toast. I haven't really tested the baking capabilities, and I don't plan on either, I mean it's a small little box. How good could any box this size be at baking? That being said, I am glad that it still has that capability. Also, I like the fact that it beeps when it's done, that's definitely helpful, and saved me from burning toast dozens of times. As far as I can see, this is a great deal.
