5.0 out of 5 stars Great coffee, takes Krups gold filter, February 9, 2002
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 43425 Platinum FlavorPlus 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
My husband and I are both very, very pleased with our Hamilton Beach FlavorPlus coffee maker. When our 10-year-old Krups coffee maker broke a few weeks ago, we began making french press coffee until we could find another drip coffee maker. Coffee from this FlavorPlus coffee maker using the FlavorPlus option tastes a lot like the coffee we made with our French press, with much, much less time and effort. It has a very very dark rich flavor, which we love. We can't wait to experiment with different beans and grinds. It is best when drunk hot. Since I like to sip my coffee on Saturday morning, when my coffee starts to get luke warm after 15 minutes or so, I'll just pop my cup in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it up. I cannot tell any flavor difference when I do this. My husband and I have also always turned our coffee maker off soon after the coffee is brewed. Then after we pour our second cup, we simply put the cup in the microwave for a few seconds. If there is a flavor difference from fresh brewed, we can't taste it.

Also this is the only Hamilton Beach coffee maker we found with a cone shaped filter basket. Our old Krups gold filter fits perfectly.

The glass carafe appears solid and does not drip when pouring coffee. I like being able to see how much coffee is in the carafe. There is a water measure that is easy to read on the front of the machine. It is also easy to pour the water into the machine.

My husband is concerned that the plastic nipple that attaches the removable coffee-grounds basket to the machine will not be durable, but for these past weeks it has been fine.

Of course the clock and time brew options work fine and are very easy to use. Also this machine looks great in the kitchen.

All in all the machine is very easy to use and clean, is great looking, appears durable and reliable, and makes a great cup of coffee. We are very very happy with it.

When ordering, please be aware that this unit is all plastic with the exception of the carafe. The picture gives a very different impression. Also, after several uses the mechanism that allows you to interrupt the brewing cycle to get a cup of coffee started malfunctioning so that the basket filled up with water while the carafe was in place. After this happening twice (be aware we just set it up to brew and the coffee maker did this on its own), I removed the spring that makes the mechanism close off the drip. Now we won't be able to interrupt the brewing cycle, but we won't have overflows either. When it works right, the coffee tastes great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected: no more, no less, December 30, 2002

I wanted this coffee maker for its auto start feature. I woke up this morning to a pot of fresh coffee. I used the flavor + option and I honestly cannot tell a difference. I no longer have to wait in the morning for my coffee to brew, so I am happy. Pouring water from the pot to the unit can be tricky, but by the time the initial cleaning was over, I had mastered the art of not spilling water all over the counter. So, in all honesty, not a terrific unit, but, I wanted to upgrade to a timed brewing unit and that feature functions well, so I consider it a good unit. It does what I expected it to do, no more, no less.

I purchased this coffee maker a week ago, used it for three days, and then put it firmly away. I will not go to the closet I put it in; it is an Ugly Place. This coffee maker is horribly made. The lid has to be pried off of the carafe, and its hinges appear to be so weak and apt to break that you find yourself preforming an oxymoron and prying gingerly. The filter takes an act of God to remove and put back onto the machine; you have to lift and turn and adjust and pray that *that* hinge will not break in the process. (because it, too, is a thin little piece of plastic) Worst of all, the carafe doesn't fit onto the hot plate. It sits askew and no amount of adjusting will make it flush with the plate. The coffee was good, although not very hot (see askew carafe), but all in all, this was just a poorly made piece of jumk.

2.0 out of 5 stars The spilling carafe, January 1, 2003

What good is a good cup of coffee if you are constantly wiping up spills from the carafe, either when you are pouring water into well, or when you are pouring coffee into your cup. We have never been able to avoid spills from the carafe. Frustrating enough to bring old machine up from basement and start to use again.

This is a shame becuase the coffee was excellent. We are considering retrurning the unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Steamed, July 24, 2005
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 43425 Platinum FlavorPlus 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
My Hamilton Beach 43425 Platinum FlavorPlus 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker creates so much steam that I had to move it away from my cabinets as it was removing the wood stain. It seems to lose most of its product through steam.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ughhh..., January 17, 2008
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 43425 Platinum FlavorPlus 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
Not very happy with this coffee maker. No matter what I did, the coffee never tasted as good as this coffee maker's' predecessor made. Tried to save a little money. You live and you learn.
