4.0 out of 5 stars Good design, great price
The design of the pitcher is well thought-out. The wide base makes it very stable, and the thick, slightly-textured handle is easy to hold on to. The triangular three-position lid (open, closed, and strainer) is a good idea.

It does a great job on the three things I use it for: ice, fruit smoothies, and finely-chopped vegetables.

Minus one star for not being rated...

Sure enough, eventually the blade just jammed. A replacement blade is backordered. I wish I had spent the money on a more well-built blender in the first place. What attracted me to this one is the fact that the pitcher is plastic and would be less likely to crack.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do as promised, June 11, 2002

The blender promised to have "ice breaking capabilities" but it fails horribly. I used medium size ice cubes and this blender just scraped the surface of the ice cubes. If you want to make smoothies, I suggest you aim to spend more money around 50 bucks for a decent blender that can actually crush ice. How much you pay is how much you get!

1.0 out of 5 stars This blender is the worst ever!, February 18, 2003

I just threw out my Hamilton Beach food processor because it broke, and yesterday my Hamilton Beach blender! I will never buy HB again. I was having an elegant dinner party and decided to mix my lobster bisque in the blender. It jammed and the engine smelled up the entire party. The ambiance was ruined by this foul electric burning smell. It never started after that. Also, whenever I tried to frappe ice, water and powdered mild to make a shake, I could never get enough air in the milk as I can with other blenders. I am spending more money on my next blender and definitely a different brand.

This blender is okay, but I`d rather spend a little more for an Oster with more power and all-metal drive.I dont think this Hamilton-Beach would last that long because of its plastic drive parts and inferior motor.Go for an Oster instead.

I read all the negative reviews. Hey, the blender only cost $20, y'know, and they TELL you before you buy it that it's only 350 watts, plastic container... But it does have steel blades and 10 speed settings. It's not fair to bad-mouth a product if it does what it's supposed to. Would you rate a Volkswagen badly because it doesn't perform as well as a Mercedes?

My 25-year old blender died, but its glass container is just fine, and fits this blender just fine. I would be amazed if I lived another 25 years so for $20, if this thing lasts 10 years, it's a good deal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ice Pulse - what a joke, September 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 50199R Blendmaster Ultra (Kitchen)
I bought this blender in hopes that it would help with my families constant desire for smoothies this summer. I filled it with ingredients and the machine had trouble breaking up the ice - which is specifically a feature on this style blender.

i am returning immediately and buying a bar style blender. It will cost more, but worth having fine crushed ice instead of huge pieces of untouched ice at the bottom.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't use ice with it, July 8, 2002
By A Customer

Although it says it will crush ice, don't even bother trying. After two times of crushing ice, the blade broke and the entire bottom of the blender fell apart, leaking strawberry smoothie all over my kitchen. Save yourself the headache and spend more money the first time.

This is a horrible blender; I tried to make a smoothie and the motor burnt out. My entire kitchen smelt like burnt plastic. This was only my fifth or sixth use of the machine. Needless to say I had to throw it out and I&
