I just bought this Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome blender (for under six bills with shipping) to replace an aging but still working Osteriser (just like Belle) that had lasted two decades. 2.0 out of 5 stars poor performance blender
I bought this blender based on others comments that it blends quickly and efficiently. I was highly disappointed when I began using the blender. Aside from the very loud noise it produces, the blender does not blend any better than any other blender - and worse than my 20+ year old blender. It states it blends for smoothies quickly, this is not true. I made pancakes today...

I just bought this Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome blender (for under six bills with shipping) to replace an aging but still working Osteriser (just like Belle) that had lasted two decades. With 800 watts, this is far more powerful, and the polished stainless steel base is far more attractive. I also like the glass jar (as my Oster had) for being able to blend hot soups. The heavier lid is very flexible but somehow survives the dishwasher without any softening (unlike the Oster). Moreover, the gear teeth the jar sits on are straight (rather than angled - what was starting to regularly slip on the Oster) for a better fit. Even though I rarely use more than fast, slow, and pulse (this blender has ten speeds and pulse), I'm glad I picked this one over the Oster 4093 Classic Beehive blender with its noisier but weaker 500 watts, the need to handwash a loose fitting lid, and just two speeds (on and pulse). Finally, I have also seen greater splashing as others have commented elsewhere from the new "Wave-Action" blade (common to both newer Hamilton and Oster blenders for more vigerous blending) when adding thick additives to liquids (but the well-fitting Hamilton lid has so far prevented any spilling). I expect this to be my last blender purchase - only a second jar and parts for when one set is in the dishwasher (of course, time will tell).

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price and More!!, March 2, 2009

My main reason for purchasing the Hamilton Beach 52277 12 Speed Classic Chrome blender was to make smoothies with frozen fruit on occasion. This blender comes with 800watts of power as well as an ice-crushing feature. When using this speed you may also between high and low. I've made several smoothies in this blender and they turn out yummy!! The blender also has the new technique of "wave" mixing, which I believe does a far better job of pulling the ingrediants down to the bottom.
I also love the chrome look of this blender. It looks very stylish sitting on my counter. The price of this blender I was pleasantly surprised- $56 with free shipping on Amazon. It also is rated 4.5 stars by other owners but I give it five stars overall. it's made of all metal which is a plus both in longevity and staying still on the counter when in use. The jar is made of glass and is a good size for families, entertaining, etc.
If you love to make smoothies, ice drinks, etc. and need a powerfull, stylish looking well-made blender that doesn't cost alot, I recommend highly the Hamilton Beach 52277 12 speed Classic Chrome blender!!!

I bought this blender today. I had an Oster of 12 speed with a 450 watt motor that although good not as reliable as this one. No more little pieces of ice in my smoothies and in only 10 seconds your smoothie is ready to be enjoy! This blender does exactly as it says in the box and is powerful(800 watts) yet not as noisy as my other blender. I paid only $39.99 for mine and comes with a 3 year warranty. Great for the price. Looks great also.

The build is definitely light compared the old classic blender it replaced. The cord is only 2 feet long, so if you want to use it anywhere an outlet isn't available at counter height you'll need an extension.

BUT, the performance won me over. It quickly makes frozen slushy drinks thick as you please with a perfect fine, slushy texture, no larger ice bits at all. There's also a 3-year warranty. Much longer than common these days... Makes me think this product was built with at least some consideration to a reasonable service life.

It seemed to struggle with making a simple milkshake though (it was difficult to get the ice cream scoops to mix with everything else). I think the included "Ice Saber" blade may be great for handling ice better than any blender ever could in the past, but it may not be so great for more traditional blender tasks. I see there are replacement blades for sale with a design that looks more traditional. I'm going to pick one up.

I've noticed there are different blades for sale for the Oster blenders too (ice, standard, milkshake) and those are also coming with only the new ice blade included. So, this issue isn't limited to Hamilton Beach. I've also noticed the reviews for most Hamilton Beach and Oster blenders seem to be excellent from people who are mainly making drinks thickened with ice... where some people using the blender for more traditional tasks seem disappointed with the performance compared to their old blender. I'm betting this is due to the blenders coming with only the new ice blades included. Buying a standard blade for other tasks would probably solve any problems. There certainly is no shortage of power with this blender.

Super-easy and super-delicious frozen margarita recipe...

Frozen Margaritas

Ingredients:

6 ounces of frozen limeade concentrate. A 6 oz can or ½ of a 12 oz can.
2/3 cup Tequila, preferably silver (clear)
1/3 cup triple sec
Around 5 cups of ice cubes
A couple limes for garnish slices and salting the glass rims if desired
Margarita salt for the glass rims if desired
POWERFUL blender

To make:

Blend 2/3 cup tequila, 1/3 cup triple sec and 6 oz limeade concentrate in blender.

Add ice cubes to fill a 5-cup blender jar

Blend at high, "icy drink" speed until slushy. Add a little more ice if not thick enough. You can store unused portions in the freezer for awhile. You may have to stir with a spoon and scoop it into glasses to serve. It will melt and be more easily drinkable pretty quickly.

Use a lime wedge to wet the rims of glasses and dip the rims into a plate of margarita salt before filling if desired. Serve with a lime slice garnish.

This is the best frozen margarita recipe I've tried (and I've tried a few)... and conveniently, the simplest as well! I've been adding a splash or two of water to the recipe and tipping the tequila / triple sec balance just a touch more to the tequila side lately. I found the drinks to be just a bit on the "sweet and sticky" side before that. Now, they taste "cleaner", more balanced and more refreshing IMO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Blender, January 9, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome 12-Speed Blender, Silver (Kitchen)
Best blender I have ever used. It's plain, rather industrial looking, but I'll leave it on my counter anyways. Probably my dad, a chef's influence. He used to tell me his favorite metal was stainless steel. It is surprisingly quiet, doesn't strain at chopping ice and making smoothies like the gourmet blenders I've tried. The glass jar is large enough. All blenders seem to claim good churning action. I think this blender does a better job of it. I notice the blades are set higher in the jar. No leaks. I think every blender I've ever owned leaked, at least a little. When you put the jar on the blender base, it's a bit looser than previous blenders I've used, but it doesn't matter when you turn the blender on. You might want to shop around. The price varies on the web, but buy it. It's a bargain.

Aside from the very loud noise it produces, the blender does not blend any better than any other blender - and worse than my 20+ year old blender. It states it blends for smoothies quickly, this is not true. I made pancakes today with oats, ricotta cheese, egg, applesauce and pumpkin puree and it did not want to blend---at all. I spent five minutes trying to have it blend, stirring, readjusting the contents, and pushing the buttons over and over again. I wish I had never bought this blender. It does no better than a blender that retails for $20. It really doesn't work in 10 seconds, more like 10 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Blender Testing, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome 12-Speed Blender, Silver (Kitchen)
Due to the recent end of a long term relationship I was put in the position of needing multiple appliances, and furniture, and TV, etc. I was cruising through Amazon looking for just the right items to start my life over. Items that would look at me from the computer screen and say "Hey, I want to be a part of your life." or maybe "Pick me. I will love you and never leave you and take all your stuff with me." Anyway, that is a subject for my therapist, not here.
I came across this blender and it spoke to me. Maybe not the statements above.. It was more like "Choose me, I won't let you down, I will grind up everything you insert in me." The blender called out to me like a bottle of Jack Daniels calls out to an alcoholic. I had to make this blender a part of my new family. I ordered immediately.

Being new to the whole single bachelor life I am not what you would call a culinary artist.
Item 1 - a simple shake. Ice cream, milk, banana. No problem. Blender handled it like a champ.
My mind began to race. Maybe I can blend all my meals. Oh yeah. This whole kitchen / cooking thing would be a snap if I could pull that off.
Item 2 - peanut butter, bread, jelly. For liquid I went with milk again. Disappointment would be an understatement. I would rather clean an ashtray with my tongue than drink that crap again. The blender, however, chewed up this combo quite easily.
Stomach still quivering, I forged on to the next combo. Who doesn't like hot dogs? A staple in every single man's life right?
Item 3 - Hot dog, bun, ketchup, mustard, relish. Went with water for liquid this time. Milk and hot dogs did not sound enticing. The blender did great. It plowed through that mystery meat with little difficulty. The taste you wonder? Do I need to answer that? I may have done some permanent damage to my digestive tract. I will french kiss a 10 dollar hooker before drinking that again.
After 2 days to clear my colon and make the nightmares stop, I decided to try one last time. I stared in the fridge long and hard. There it was... right in front of me the whole time. One of my favorite meals. Cold pizza and beer. Why had I not thought of this before?
I must admit, the blender struggled with the cold pizza. It just wasn't soaking up the beer as well as I thought it would. The beer foamed up and threatened to spill out. Had to hold the lid down tight.
I will not hold you in suspense on this "can't miss" item. I think falling down the hole of an outhouse would have been better than putting this concoction in my pie hole. I learned something also... You CAN continue to throw up long after you think your stomach is empty and you are done.

I believe that I will give the blender a break for a while... and my stomach... and my colon.
If my ex-girlfriend is reading this, laugh it up. You will soon be making new friends... I wrote your phone number on the wall at the truck stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highy Recommended, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome 12-Speed Blender, Silver (Kitchen)
In the last two (2) years my family of six (6) has started making a lot of smoothies with frozen fruit and ice. I got tired of buying inexpensive blenders burning out or wearing out quickly. After reading other reviews about this product, I decided to purchase it.

Comes with 3-year warranty. I am very pleased with the performance compared to all the other blenders we have used. It is nice looking, sturdy, and well built. Good sturdy base and the part that spins around is very well made. Nice large sturdy glass bowl. Cord can retract to inside of unit so it is out of the way. We enjoy using the blender compared to previous experiences.

I only gave 4-stars though because when we make smoothies where all of the fruit is frozen you have to keep adding liquid, move the fruit around, or let the fruit thaw a little before so it will blend. Other than that situations, smoothies take less than 30 seconds.

I think it is a very good value for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it works with a full blender jar, but ..., October 24, 2008

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome 12-Speed Blender, Silver (Kitchen)
Maybe this blender works well with a full blender jar, but I bought it for my morning smoothies-- a cup or so of yogurt, a handful of fruit and 2-3 ice cubes. It does an OK job, but takes a while longer than my old beehive (RIP). From the comments from the margarita makers, I expected it to pulverize the ice more quickly, but there are always pebbles left in my drink. So maybe a design that is effective for big batches is not necessarily good for projects of 16 oz or less.

It is nice looking.

UPDATE: 10 weeks later. If I could change my rating I would take away two stars. Recently I had a chance to test it on larger load and it failed miserably. It could not blend 24 oz of thinly sliced, overcooked russet potatoes in broth. I could have done it easily by hand but instead tried for the "convenience" of using the blender. Just made more mess to clean up.

So... no good for small jobs, useless at big jobs. The big tragedy is that my old blender probably still had more useful life in it than this thing.

Easily makes bread crumbs. Even works well for making almond or walnut crumbs. Is sturdy, though a bit on the heavy side due to the glass jar, and is not as loud as other blenders. Works great for smoothies and good for Margaritas. Very satisfied.
