Our experience is not like any of the others on this site. As soon as we turned it on, it simply EXPLODED. The wave action swirls the contents upward with such force that even with a lot of pressure applied to the cover it gushes out and, as you can imagine, makes a terrible mess. Even at the lowest setting it still is uncontrollable, unless it contains only a small...

I had an older Hamilton Beach that held up for many years, but decided it was finally time to upgrade. I had two Osters previous where the blade assemblies froze up so I tried something else. This blender has gobs of power and is the first blender I've owned that actually crushes the ice with no lumps or chunks. The "Wave Action" does exactly what it claims. It pulls the mix down to the bottom of the blender so everything gets mixed very well. For a mid-priced blender, this one does the job splendidly. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Product, April 4, 2007

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 54244 WavePower Plus 14-Speed Blender, White (Kitchen)
I was a little hesitant about buying another Hamilton Beach blender after having two previous blenders of this particular brand and being less than thrilled to say the least. This blender is not as attractive as some of the other blenders I've had, it's very plain looking (no fancy chrome finish or design). But DON'T judge a book by it's cover!

I've had the blender for about a week and so far, so good! This blender is quite powerful. The other day I filled it with 8 ice cubes and huge chunks of frozen mango to make a shake. This was a test for my new blender because none of the others would've been able to handle all of the ice and mango chunks and I would have killed the motor. Surprisingly, there were absolutely no chunks and everything was perfectly blended within 10-15 seconds on the high, frozen drink setting. Other blenders I've had left my drinks with huge chunks of ice and took forever to blend, leaving my frozen beverages watery.

The new "wave action" design promises that you will not need to mix the drink with a spoon because the blades will draw all ingrindients to the bottom of the container and back up again in a circular motion. However, with my frozen drinks I still found the need to give them a stir but not anywhere near as much as I had to with my old blenders.

I love the fact that the blender is glass (as plastic can develop a strange smell and easily stain) and it can be put in the dishwasher. I even put the blades in the dishwasher though the directions said not to and have not had a problem. The glass container is also much bigger than any of the other blenders I've had which is also a huge plus.

With other blenders, I did not notice any real difference between the power settings. But with the Power Plus Blender, there is a noticable difference in the speed and power of the different settings.

Great blender, very powerful, and certainly worth the price. The only reason I did not give this product 5 stars is because there are still some times when I have to give my drinks a quick stir despite the product's "wave action" design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Blender reasonably priced, April 24, 2008

I agree with J Stone's review below. This blender has a blade-and-jar design (called wave action) that sucks the ingredients in for incredibly thorough blending, resulting in smooth, uniform consistency. It has a powerful (700-watt peak) motor that, combined with the wave action, yields excellent results. The motor carries a 3-year warranty. I use it for ice shakes and it crushes ice easily with no lumps left whatsoever. Its 48-oz glass jar secures easily on its sturdy base and is dishwasher friendly. Easy to clean and with no parts to assemble, this is my best blender to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would buy again, June 18, 2007

I'm planning to order a second one. We've had ours about 4 months, and we use it about 4 times a day, so having a second one would help a bit with washing the glass container. We love that it's glass.

The only minor problem that we had the first few days was learning to screw the container into the blade-holding bottom part. You have to get it screwed on level to seat it properly, or it can leak a bit when you tip it. Not a big deal, though, and we haven't had any problem since the second day or so, when we learned how to take the extra few seconds to prevent the problem.

It's a solid product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, March 2, 2010
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 54244 WavePower Plus 14-Speed Blender, White (Kitchen)
This blender makes icey drinks and smoothies very well and crushes the ice with ease. The only problem I have with it is that the base gets stuck and is difficut to take off to clean sometimes. But filling it with hot water and waiting awhile does the trick.

crushes ice beautifully--creates smooth creamy creations with almost anything. only downside--flat bottom makes it hard to catch everything (ex: chocolate chips stay in chunks at the bottom.)

Our experience is not like any of the others on this site. As soon as we turned it on, it simply EXPLODED. The wave action swirls the contents upward with such force that even with a lot of pressure applied to the cover it gushes out and, as you can imagine, makes a terrible mess. Even at the lowest setting it still is uncontrollable, unless it contains only a small ampount of liquid. Why weren't we warned? The spare instructions make no mention of the need to firmly hold down the cover (however vainly). The only amswer I can think of is that everyone else is using ice, which when crushed may act as a lind of ballast.
